Varmint caliber ideas?

If I'm going to shoot a 20 cal its going to be a 20 Practical. Just run it thru a redding bushing die and you have them formed and no trimming. For Coyotes its a 6MM Ackley improved 1 - 14 with 65gr Vmax at over 4100 fps. for 0 to 450 yds no hold over required. Shoot right at them.

It is not fur friendly

If you want to save the fur go to a 20 Practical with a 9" twist and run the 55 Berger just off the lands at 3220+. If you want to use a repeater the 55 Berger will do the same, and fit in a 2.226" Mag, in a 20 EXTREME with less powder. You will have to compensate a bit more than a 22-250 with 55 V-Max but will get less wind drift and have more energy at 500 yards. The good part is you will have the same energy at the muzzle as the 22-250 has at 100 yards and the 55 Berger will either not exit if bone is hit or pass through leaving a pencil hole on the other side. Sight at 100 yard Zero or go up 1 MOA to get a 200 yard Zero then 2MOA for 250, 3MOA for 300, 5 MOA for 400 and 8 MOA for 500 yards.

I do have a 6 BRX. It has a 1 - 8 and shoots 90 gr Nosler BT real good. Im waiting for some nice weather to get out and shoot it. .Just had it built

I had Anderson Buchanan a young and up coming rifle builder. Very good what he does. He also built my 6 MM Ackley improved and just fire forming it shows lots of promise.

I have a 3 groove pacnor 26in 20P. Crazy accurate. 39sbk at 3850fps gave me my record 3 shot group at 100. I was too chicken to make another shot so I claimed it as is!

Economical to shoot and very little recoil. Easy to make. I use redding bushing dies and LC brass.

I too have been thinking of the 30br for coyote gun or a groundhog carry gun. A 110 vmax might good.

Looking for something different

Hi Jortz,
Over the 20 years I’ve been shooting PDs I’ve had any number of rifles from 20 PPC to 6.5X284 and most stops in between. You say you want something different? That’s my kinda thinking. Probably my most fun gun was a 220 Swift Ackley Improved, with a 55gr Nosler BT it was red mist and PD parts! It was cooked at 1200 rounds. It was on a Stolle action that was switch barreled with a 243 Ackley,it’s still going strong at just over 1100 rounds. Another great rifle turned out to be a 6mm Remington Improved. Both the 220 and 6 Rem have quite a bit of taper and improve well, they also have long necks which is good. The 6 Rem was on a trued 700 action and would shoot a dot! After over 1700 rounds, should have been sooner, it was replaced with a 6X284 the jury’s still out on it.
Jortz, build something fun to shoot! My 223 AI with 40gr Ballistic Tips is great fun to 300 yards after that it just hits them.
Build something fun and enjoy!

On the fire forming:
I’m a Ackley Improved fan, a bit more velocity and the 40 deg shoulder diverts the unburied powder granuales to the inside of the case neck instead of the barrel, besides, they look bitching!
Instead of fire forming all my cases for a new rifle/barrel I do my barrel breakin/load work up with new (factory) brass jamed .015”. By that time I have a pretty good idea of what is going to shoot. Then find a powder charge for the formed cases that is as close as I an get to the new case MV, I have found that usually .2-.4gr more powder is required in the new cases. That was counter-intuitive to me so I had to go the other direction first!
As I load 200 to 300 rounds for each rifle I take on a five day PD trip to Wyoming the new cases shoot to the same poi as th formed cases. The 243 AI I’m loading for now takes .3gr more IMR4895 for the new cases and is 7fps slower. The 70gr Nosler BT shoots the same poi, at least to 300 yards.
Good shooting, you will love your 6mm Ackley,
Stoney
