Varmint Bullet for 300 BLK

I have only tried two bullets, but both have failed the ricochet test. 125 grain Speer TNT and 110 grain Sierra HP. Each will just poke a hole in the animal and go bouncing off into the distance at 300 BLK speeds. Next trip to the LGS I'll see if I can find some Nosler 110 grain Varmageddon bullets to try, but not going to get my hopes up.

Anyone have experienced recommendations?

I use the 110 Varmegedden and I would bet that it will open up.

Depending on the angle I have gotten frangible bullets to ricochet when fired from my 300-221.

I think you would be very hard press to find a 30cal bullet that never bounced. Maybe something with a very thin jacket and a compressed powder core.

If you can get them to feed in your 300 a standard 150gr FMJBT loaded backwards really does some damage when it hits critters.

Look into the Sierra 135 gr Varminter. I shoot them at deer with my 300 BLK, and they seem to come apart pretty well, as I never get exit wounds, and I only find pieces of the bullet.

Vmax or varmageddon would be my choice, however at Blackout speeds it acts more like a controlled expansion bullet at distance. It will expand perfectly, sort of like a core-loct or the like, but won't blow apart.

Been there, done that, jacket is to tough. Just a pencil. Think fella's, Ive been loading and shooting 300 Blk since 2012. Tried just damn near everything I thought would work during the powder/bullet drought.
Think 7.63x39 speed. Conventional 30 cal. bullets will not work well at distance.

I never did find any Armageddon bullets. The BLK has been on the back burner while working on some other stuff.

There is no such thing as a bullet that won't ricochet unless it's a frangible. Barnes makes a 150 grain and one that is 90 grain, but they don't sell the 90 gr bullet alone only loaded ammo. Barns Range ammo is what it is called. There are some other 308 frangible, not sure of what weights might be available.

Maker bullets, has an 85 grain expanding bullet that is tipped copper. Expands to about .750". But for varmints shooting close to the ground just about anything will skip. The 85 grain bullet at least will drop energy pretty quick.

I have pushed over 3000 fps and it holds about a foot of arc out to about 250-275 yards, in a 16" bolt action and about 2750" in a 12".

From there, it isn’t hard to figure out the issue getting slow moving bullets to break up.

I use Sierra 135 grain bullet with the funky serrated tip, designed for the BLK, at BLK velocity in a 308. I find it to be a fine groundhog and closer range varmint bullet. It shoots remarkably well toned down in a 308.

Lots of .311 pistol bullets out there. Break out your old RCBS Lubamatic bullet sizer. lnstall a .309 sizer die. PRESTO! .309 varmint bullets .309 too big? Just pop in a .308 sizer!! What you're doing is Swaging these bullets DOWN in size.
.311 pistol bullets are used in 32auto, 32S&W, 30Mauser, 32H&R, 327Federal.
This isn't an original idea from me. Shooters did this in the 50s and 60s to feed surplus 30cal Carbines from WWll and Korea.. Thin jackets, soft cores of pistol bullets make GREAT varmint bullets... Easy swaging/sizing too..

Been loading Blackout for a long time. I'm sure your equation is valid, but from actual experience there are not many manufactured that do this at distance at Blackout speeds. As dellet said, there is really no projectile that will not ricochet in the right circumstances, some just do it in smaller pieces and don't travel far.

That’s exactly what the equation tells you. Velocity is key and the BLK doesn’t have enough. Not picking on the BLK. Any slow cartridge will have the same problem.

Why is there no allowance for spin rate in that equation?

That's a bit of a wild card for the cartridge. RPM over 250k is common, 300k not uncommon.

It sure is, my jr. science kit says this thing defies just about every conventional thought most shooters have about - well , ballistics in general. Let's try that formula in say a 6 twist, 12 inch barrel running around 2700 fps plus and see if it works. I doubt it works for everything, most things but 300 blk tends to defy the logic of many, many shooters.
