Variment Rifle Ideas?

Hey fella's I need a little help with selecting a good variment rifle to build. I already have a 22-250 remington. I bought the gun from a guy who I work with. He sold me the barrel and action. I place it in a Fajen stock. That is all I did to it. It shoots well, but I don't know whether I should redo the rig having it accurized with a new heavy variment barrel. I like the .22 caliber but I also like the .243 cal. I would mind having something in .243 P.O. Improved.
What do ya'll think? Any ideas???????????

*If you decide to go custom in .243,6 MM) give the 6 BR some serious thought. Study the bullet weight verses twist to decide what you want in the yardage department and have a ball with it.

I have the 22-250, a 243 and the 243 Ackley Improved. I like all 3. If your action is a Rem. 700 you could have your gunsmith pin the recoil lug. That would give you the option of having a switch barrel gun. My 700 Remmy now has a sporter 243 barrel on it that shoots very nice. It originally was a Varmint Series 22-250. I can easily go between the 2 barrels in a matter of minutes.

The 243 Ackley is my long range go to thump stick. IT will kill with authority at 500 yards & beyond with a 70 grain bullet.
My hunting partner uses a 6 BR with the same 70 grain blitzking, it is super accurate and he has made shots @525 yards with it. It's very easy to load and has good barrel life.

I use a 6BR shooting 70 Blitzking,running at 3500 f/s and have many one shot kills out to 620yds on Va groundhogs. If you want the strech things out the 243AI with a 10tw barrel, running the 87 Vmax can run you past 1000yds.

I would highly recommend the 6BR for your new varmint rifle. Go with a Bartlein 28", 1-8 twist, .236 Bore barrel. My barrel loves the 105grn A-Max and Varget powder. I am getting ready to report on my groups that I shot today. After todays load testing, I am absolutely ecstatic about the 6BR.

I've got a 22-250AI,223AI,243AI,6Br,243,6Rem and 6RemAI. I always say my favorite is what I'm carrying at the time. My 22-250AI has a 1/12 twist barrel 243AI 1/10 same with the 243,6Rem,6RemAI and 6Br,223AI have 1/14 twist. I've only got one rifle for the VLD bullets and thats a 6.5x284.

You have to look at the yardage your doing most of your shooting at you sure don't want to be shooting 300yds with VLD bullets IMHO and what Jerrrold post was right. Since you have the dies you could do the 22-50 set up for the 70/75gr VLD or bush the bolt and do it on the 223/223AI case that won't kill your pocket book on reloading. Lots of options

Check out the 6x47L! I have a 22-250,223,22 Hornet,17 HMR, I have killed Chucks at 500yds with the 22-250, it shoots great especially for a factory Win varmint rifle. I had a 6AI but didn't like fire forming brass. When I started looking around a lot of people on this site and a lot of gun smiths I spoke to recommended I look at the 6x47L. I will perform with the 6AI with a lot less powder,no fire forming. When I started working up loads it shot almost everything under 1/2" and most <1/4". I know alot is due to the gun but I believe like the 6br it is an inherently accurate cartridge. I can easily get 3700fps with a 70 gr or 3400fps with an 88gr. Take a look

What is a variment? I have never seen one of those critters. It might take a really big rifle to kill a variment. A variment might be kin to an anoga. I would like to cover my couch with one of those anoga-hides but I have never been able to find one or even know what one looked like. :crazy: I just could not let that one pass. I am in one of those moods tonight.

Come on 2506 Naugas are extinct I shot the last one and covered everthing in my house in its skin ie Nauagahyde and if you know about Naugas you should know about variments They are a cross between a ground hog, hoary marmot, prairie dog, badger & skunk. They to are almost extinct because of that natural orange dot on their chest

I was wondering why my old couch had that funky smell about it. Must have been the skunk blood line was a little stronger in the Nauagahyde they used on it.

I Like what Sam in Va said, Put a quality 22-250 barrel on have it pinned for a switch barrel setup get a 6mm 0r 243 Ackley barrel and you are set. A small 22 is always a good idea i.e. 22 mag, 22 hornet even up to 222 or 223. Start out close with the small stuff and work out with the big guns.

There is a 22BR which is every bit as amzing as a 2-250. Barrel life is probably better a s less smove goes up the barrel at every shot. Im workng backwards at the moment as my favorite load is a 80gr nosler custom comp at 3100fps--shoots flat expansion is varied over 300 yd.

my vote is for a 6x47lapua. It is close to the 6br but with a little more punch.
