Second Thoghts

I'm down to brass tacks on my new walking varminter and I'm having second thoughts on caliber. I had originally chose a 6br, but now I'm thinking I'd like to have more velocity. 22's are out as I already have a 22-250 and a 223. Worried about barrel life in a 243.
Any thoughts?

You may want to look at the 6x47 Lapua. Can't really give you the figures, but it would be a step up from the 6BR..

Another one would be the 6mmAI..

All comes down to what you are going to do with it..

I have a 223AI and then build a 6BR... Like both of them, but the 223AI rules right now.. Your milage may vary..

Are you looking for something in a wildcat/bench caliber or off the shelf?

If it’s a walking gun I’d say forget about the “exotic” calibers and get yourself a nice over the counter factory gun and save yourself some money.

You didn’t mention your quarry which would be a factor in my caliber choice as well. What are you chasing?

Regardless you can go wrong with a CZ, Remington, or Savage in any order you chose to put them in. I have a CZ 527 in 204 Ruger and it covers all my small game, varmint, and predator hunting in one caliber at under 7 pounds loaded with a scope.

Can you give us some more details?

Steve,
Thanks for your interest. It's going to be a groundhog gun.
I have a perfectly good Ruger Varminter in 22-250 that I've had a little bit of work done on. With 52 grain Bergers it shoots around 1/2".
The problem is I've always wanted a custom varminter. Do I need it? No. I keep my shots with the Ruger under 350 and rarely miss, I really hate to miss. Under 250 and it's a lead pipe cinch. I'd just like to own a rifle that shoots better than I can shoot it.

Steve,
In Maryland, where I live, a 350 yard shot is a hard thing to come by. Too many rolling hills and treelines etc.

Mark,

I fully understand now.

We on the West Coast call a "walking gun" a Coyote getter and do most,if not all) of our rat shooting off a bench.

Just trying to help.
