243 Re-barrel…ideas?

I have a model 670 in 243 that was given to me by my dad as my first deer gun over 22 years ago. I’ve put over 2000 rounds through it in those years and it has always shot pretty good but the groups are starting to open up a bit and the fouling is getting really bad so I think it’s time for a rebarrel. I have a 243 AI so I was thinking of going some direction besides 243 or 243 AI. I would like something that would shoot a highly explosive bullet for gophers but also be able to take out a deer to 500 yards or so. It seems like once you get bigger than 6mm, there isn’t much selection for varmint bullets. Any thoughts on what to chamber in? Thanks.

Might want to look at a 6.5 offering. Lots of bullet choices. The cartridge choice is up in the air creedmore, 284, 260, 6.5 x 47 etc. It will give you the 500 yd deer gun for sure. I myself built a second 243AI with the same reamer so that fireforming won't be as hard on barrels and I can trade off while the other is cooling.

Ever consider the 6mm Remington AI, or advertised as a .244 Rem AI on some barrel manufacturers sights. I've read alot of things about this cartridge. It has a long neck on the cartridge so you can throat them deeper for heavier bullets. Try that in an 8" twist barrel and you could shoot as heavy a bullet as you want!

Although it is a barrel burner 6-284 . 6mm on steriods . i have built a couple for deer and ground hogs for customers . i'm in the process of doing one for antelope and the guy wants to kill some dogs also . His last gun he got 1100 rounds through it till we had to set back got another 500 before the barrel was shot . 87 v max for dogs and 105 bergers for deer. www.therifler.com
