You can also try TAC, but R15 would be the first substitute.

During the height of the powder shortage, neither Varget or RL15 were available out my way. So based upon this factor I was forced to try more available powders so I tried W748, and 2000MR . Some shooters frown upon W748 ball powder in a .308 precision, but NOT the case per my data, some of my best loads were based upon W748. I also worked 2000MR but currently I can't find this powder anywhere currently. Not to worry I still have about 9# if I deciede to go back to 2000MR.

ive known several people that get a heck of a group with w748 in .308 rifles..

for the op..... re15.... personally ive found re15 more accurate in all my rifles than varget. Still not to this day found a good load with varget... found .5 or .6 group loads with it but not .2s or .3s groups....

In a .308 I recommend IMR 8208 XBR. Performance near identical with Varget -- and maybe more speed. Not just a "make do" solution, we've seen some guns shoot better in competition with the XBR, with lower ES.

Also, if you like Reloder 15, but can't find it, remember Norma 203B is essentially the same stuff. Made to the same formula, by the same powder maker.

H4895 would be my stop if not varget. Look here for varget
www.shootersproshop.com
www.recobstargetsupply.com
One of them usually has it at least every month

I really wish powder was more easily legally shipped. I can walk into any of my LGS's and I will find Varget in stock (both 1# and recently i've seen even 8# jugs). I have about 10# myself, and if anyone want's it I live in southern NH , I will gladly hook you up as a favor.

What weight bullets are you referring to using IMR 8208?.........Several guys here i shoot with use it with great success with 155.5s but nobody i know around here is using it with 185s to 215s.......Just curious.

Hello everyone. I am fairly new to distance target shooting and was hoping to ask a few questions. This site seems to be “ the place” to do so. I am competing in my first 300 yard benchrest match at my local club in 3 weeks. I’m shooting a 6.5 creedmoor. I know, I know, I should be shooting some sort of 6 mm. The creedmoor is what I have and what I’ve been shooting and loading for these last 2 years or so. Jim Borden is building me a rifle that I probably will convert to a 6 mm in time. For now I would like to see if I can be competitive with what I have. My question is this. All the loads I’ve worked up for this rifle have been with 130 grain or heavier bullets. Should I try lighter bullets at such close range? Can I typically expect a little more precision out of lighter bullets traveling faster at closer ranges or should I just stick with what I’ve been doing with the heavier bullets. I’m probably asking a dumb question. Thank you all in advance for replying.

one of the best 308 's i have done that didn't shoot with varget , bench mark . that rifle used 168 gr bullets don't know if that helps . but also 4350 imr shoots well in my 308. but here again 165 gr bullets . good luck in you quest .
