Varget Price

If we all stop paying high prices supply will back up and prices will come down. I got some cci #41 primers the other day. Was $6.64 per 100. Could only have 2 boxes. Thats $66.40 for a thousand. Theres a shop in phoenix charging $120 cash. MI will not buy from them anymore. Robbery is going on there. Just saw there price for 300 and 6.5 prc lapua brass... nuts. For anyone needing 300 prc lapua go to blue collar first. Way cheeper and in stock. I planned way ahead and stocked up before all this happened. I will not pay that high. I know supplies have increased and im okay with that just not robbery.
I noticed a add from Bruno today that they got some new Lapua brass in stock.
The 6br Norma that I wanted was still out of stock but they had a price on it for $160 previously it was $101, surely not for Real!https://www.brunoshooters.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=7731

Fiddle fkn around at home, makes sure I don't have to drive hundreds of miles to do it at a match, Jim. You can call it whatever but I call it testing. You might've missed where I said that it may be my best load ever.
Nothing wrong with spending a few grand buying powder if you can do it and you want to, though.
Well I have found a few powders testing at home that shot lights out but they failed miserably at a match. That's all I'm saying Mike. I know you don't shoot the same cartridges that I do, even thought my 30 Gorilla is the same as the 30 Major other than the shoulder angle but I gave up on that cartridge because I couldn't get anywhere near the same results that I could get with the 30BR.

That's too bad Jim. I've had pretty good luck doing what I do.

Well Dean Breeden years ago tried a version of it called the 30RCH, which stood for Red C Hair. Don't ask me why he called it that but him and Dave Apple tried and tried and it wouldn't work for Dean either. As both of us know he is the best pure short range score shooter that I know and for him not to be able to get it going well there is something wrong somewhere. He scrapped it and when I told him I was picking up a rifle chambered in a similar cartridge he said don't waste your time. Well I tried to prove him wrong again and I tried and tried but again he was right. I won a handful of 100 yard aggs with it but to me, I never shot more than 21 x's with it and to me it doesn't have the HP to push the bullets at the speed I'm looking for at 2 or 300 yards. To me it wasn't so much a waste of time or money, it was a learning experience. IMO it doesn't come close to a 30BR as far as consistency and performance goes. I know like 2 people who use the 30 Grendal in some form and I'm not impressed with it's performance. To each is own.

Jim, I get it. You didn't have much success with your version. No problem, but I have. Dean's a great guy and I'm not taking anything away from him but I've made it work well for me. I've said it before but it needs saying again...I shoot what I feel gives me the best chance of winning. If I thought a 30BR gave me a better chance, I'd be shooting one before the end of today. It's not like I haven't had several of both, Jim. Hell, I was probably the first person to test the Grendel case as a 30 and I very likely have more experience with it than anyone else. Maybe that testing in the yard helped but I have beaten more 30BRs with it than not. That's just a fact. Not bragging, just the truth. It has always been very competitive for me. The horse is dead already buddy. You do you and stop telling me what I happen to do well with will never work. I like it. You don't have to. I'm back to shooting it more of late. I think I won the first match and 2nd in the next. I struggled the last two matches but guess what. I also struggled with my 6mm at those same matches, so it wasn't the gun. I'm on the fence right now as to whether I'll shoot the UBR nats in Unlimited with the 30 or with the 6. They're both good enough to get it done if I do my part. It's a good problem to have, deciding between two bbls that I think can both win a nationals.

This month I paid $45 for a pound of Varget at a local shop I've been using for years which has a long-standing history of not overcharging. I know the owner and his prices are based what he has to charge to make a reasonable profit. Incidentally, this was the last one on the shelf.

Yea, I nearly choked on the price. However, my 243 Browning loves this powder with 85 BTHP's and I have a bunch of bullets thanks to a very generous gift from joshb. Since I had primers, and bullets for this rifle, I took the plunge to use up these components. With rationing my shooting on this rifle, I can probably stretch shooting it another 2 years with the component I have on hand. That's how I rationalized spending the money. :(

I guess it comes down to priorities - how much you want to continue in the hobby vs. what you can afford after essential costs are covered. Personally, I'm downsizing and consolidating so I can "feed" my favorite rifles and unloading some rifles that are not my top favorites. At my age, I don't believe this situation (shortage and high inflation) is going to be resolved anytime soon to make a difference for me and may get worse. Cost of electric power just tripled in my area after my 2-year contract expired!

With the significant increase in violent crime, more people are arming themselves thus the heavy increase in demand for ammunition which will divert more and more reloading supplies to more profitable products for manufacturers.

I've had a great run at shooting and hunting - at 75 I'm nearly the end but I feel bad for the young shooters entering the sport - the costs - the shortages - the negative public stigma of the shooting sports. It's a sad time for a sport that has given me so much joy and has a rich history in our country.

No I'm glad it's worked for you as much as it has. I wish I could of said the same about mine to you.

FWIW, It's been a while since I shot an IBS match. I looked up my last match and I won the 100. It was the year Richard Sissel set the record with his hot ABC bbl. Richard won the grand without winning a yardage, but he shot very well. I was not a member so my scores were listed at the bottom but by the scores, I won a 5 way tie by creedmoor. It was a 100/200/300 yard night shoot. I dropped a point(barely) at 200 and that put me down the list at 200. The 300 was a crapshoot, as a storm came through that took targets and backers away and we ran out of light. Couldn't see bullet holes and could barely see the targets at all. We were supposed to be finished with the 300 yard before it got dark on the last day. The 100 and 200 were under lights but they weren't set up for 300 at all. My friend Mike Niblett was on pace to set a record.

I want to say that was the match there, where a tree took a power line down downrange and we all had hail damage to our vehicles. 3/4" hail.

Sorry for the derail.

To get back to the question about varget, I would not pay that kind of premium for it unless the alternatives would not accomplish what I wanted to do.
Another question would be how many bullets and primers you want to use trying to come up with the alternative.

Yes, components make it tough to do as much testing, or just shooting, as I'd like right now.

No need to apologize. It was my bad not yours. Richard set the records in 2018. Your talking about that 2017 night shoot at Buckcreek near the end of May if I remember correctly.

My Savage BVSS 223 said in the instructions that accuracy load was the Sierra 69smk--so I got some bullets called Sierra he says use Varget , never look back, I am a newbie so I knew all of the internet "vibe" about Varget--was aware it is a lot of folks Pet powder--None to be found but then like magic my local came up with 3 lbs $49 ea so I splurged--My first step tests, I shot the best one hole group I have with this rifle--it was like magic--I am not saying that I can't get it there with another powder--I am sure I can sooner or later but I was wowed at how easy that load made good--it was 24.4 grains Every thread on the web says 25 g with 69 smk will Shoot! And boy it sure did for me
So...Am I a Varget junkie now? Or do I want to burn through a pile of primers to find something else
I have let it soak in a few days--went out and repeated my success today so I will buy it if I find it local and never look back

I have about $425 in the 8lber that's setting on my table. To get it I had to buy an overpriced 8 of H4350 at a local overpriced on everything shop, and then drive an hr to swap a guy for the Varget fix I needed.

Your good for about 900 rounds, just roll with it. If BCR ends up with some SW Precision or Match buy it and you'll have good back up powders.

Truth is, a lot of us would pay the extra 5 to ten bucks per pound if it meant the difference between getting them to all go into the same hole or not; especially for a barrel that has proven it has the potential with that powder. You will make up the difference in bullets, powder and time spent chasing another load, not to mention confidence lost.

If I have to work up a load, I would use a more available and affordable proven powder.
