Varget powder

Does Varget powder in a 223 work better with a magnum primer ?
Are CCI BR4 primers a magnum primer ?
Don't think you need a magnum primer for the .223 but it probably would work o k. The CCI BR-4 is not a magnum primer. If you swap primers on an existing load drop back on the powder charge and work up the load again.

I'm not a fan of Varget in 223 except for long loaded ammo where you can get more powder in the case.

I prefer finer kernel powders like H322 or XBR for better metering and better case ullage.

Varget does do good with mild primers though. I like the Wolf SRMs with varget to push the 88gr ELDM in 223.

Most of us run CCI 450 primers in our 223s for our 1000 yard steel plate matches. My particular Savage punctures 400s, they may be a tad hot but we're shooting 88 ELDS using Varget. Chris' load is a tad hotter but uses a custom action and has no problems. It's incredibly accurate, not sure the 450s make a difference but since we've got a lot we just use them in everything.

I use magnum primers for my 223 loads only because they are more durable and take pressure better than say a Remington 6 1/2 or cci400 that are more geared to a 22 hornet type cartridge and pressure.
Thicker cups.

Not sure about a magnum primer, as I have never tried one, but theres is certainly an accuracy benefit from using match primers and I prefer CC1 BR4's over Federal Gold ( when I can find them). I have also had good results with Russian primers.

I've done several test with four different 223 in both ar's and bolt actions and I've always had the best accuracy and lowest ES with standard 400's vs the 450's. Although, the 400 will show pressure much sooner than the 450. I let the target decide what to use ; )

I've use Varget extensively in the 223 Rem bolt rifles with outstanding results using non-magnum Federal 205M (match primers).

I have also used Remington 7 1/2 primers with Varget with equally excellent results. The Lyman Reloading Handbook characterizes these primers as "small rifle magnum" primers.

BR4s are standard mix with better QC than 400s.
They also have a thicker cup than 400s.
They are also expensive…
I use them in service rifle loads… I can’t say if they are worth the extra money or not… but, they work very well with Varget for me.
