VARGET is the wrong choice for .223 load 50-55gr Target Load. what is best choic

23.4 gr VV N133 behind a 52 gr SMK is magic in my 20 inch barreled Varmint AR.

Reloder 7 is Sierras accuracy choice for 55 gr 223 loads. I've used tons of it in the past, and would still be using it if the local shops had any.

Re: IF NO VARGET what is a second choice for .223 load 55gr Target Load??

Ramshot X-Terminator and Accurate 2230 work well in my Ruger M77 Mk II.

They are pretty close in burn rate, and both are easy to throw.

They are the EXACT same powder in different cans.

For proof see the Western Powder load guide, they use the EXACT SAME data.

H4895 is listed as a very good powder for a wide range of bullets. What is everyones opinion and experience with this powder?

4895 is ALWAYS good to have on the shelf, and not just for the .223. It's good in quite a few cartridges.

Load for my ar .223 and several friends 223 ar's and bolt guns. 25.5 H335 shoots<.5" . It also meters great in a throw, which is a serious consideration when loading 5K rounds for Pdog huntin!

25 grains of Benchmark with 55 grain Varmageddons will shoot 1/2 MOA at 200 yards out of my Mossberg MVP.

Disregard shot 5, big gust of wind as I broke it

Three component shortages ago in 2015 when this thread was originally posted, there were a variety of good answers regarding potential substitutes for Varget. Today, even all the potential Varget substitutes are unavailable, so the very best choice is probably to take up fly fishing or knitting until the shortage is over. ;)

Reloder 11 works as well but do not try to find it as it’s been off production since the early ‘70s.

I have access to it because a buddy bought out an estate with some unopened cans and we are trying to burn it up before it goes bad.

If you have some you can get good load data in the first Sierra manual from 1971.

now this is just my observation, on a couple of rifles. so...

out of a uniflow, w748 and 8208 short range groups are very acceptable (varminting) and essentially equal. however, the 748 charges are thrown more consistently, while the 8208 vary some in weight but are much more temp consistent.

i am not willing to expend the components, nor have the range, for a complete long range test, but i've often wondered if weighed 8208 would give another slight bump up in accuracy.
