Might want to give CFE223 a try.

+1

CFE 223 works great with my 50-gr TNTs.

Ditto Ramshot TAC.

Re: IF NO VARGET what is a second choice for .223 load 55gr Target Load??

52-55gr AR my choices would be Benchmark and W748

62-69gr would be Benchmark, W748 and XBR8208

77gr I've only tested W748 so far.

Re: IF NO VARGET what is a second choice for .223 load 55gr Target Load??

Im really surprised no one has said IMR 3031. My understanding is that this powder was used extensively in the development of the AR platform. Ive had great results in a 20 inch AR rifle. IMR 3031 is my "go to" powder for 55 grain .223 loads.

The 223 Rem is too flexible, and there are too many good powders for it, for one not to slip through the cracks.

IMR 4320 is another.

Re: IF NO VARGET what is a second choice for .223 load 55gr Target Load??

Ramshot X-Terminator and Accurate 2230 work well in my Ruger M77 Mk II.

They are pretty close in burn rate, and both are easy to throw.

Re: IF NO VARGET what is a second choice for .223 load 55gr Target Load??

H4895 looks to be ideal I for the mid weight bullets 50 - 55 range. I am going to start there with my load development.

And yes not only is the AR-15 one of the most versatile rifles the ammo is real versatile. Hadn't realized just how many choices there are. Geeze its like motor oil choices in cars!!

I will also try TAC and AA2015.

Re: IF NO VARGET what is a second choice for .223 load 55gr Target Load??

Varget poor choice for 55`s, as stated W748, H335, N140 much better option.

2520....... Oh and try some 2520!

Uhh +1?

Also +1 to H335
And try benchmark!
H322
And then check other powders in those burn rates.

My AR likes Cfe223 in heavier bullets, like your finding with varget. Same as N140. Use N133 instead.

Per my data , I've had the best accuracy with the 52's-55's with Benchmark through my AR. Try it I think you will be impressed. There really is no "bad" .223 powders you just have to test and log your barrel's likes and dislikes. We can all make suggestions but your specific barrel will yield different outcomes than ours. The great bonus with Benchmark is it's not a popular powder so when the SHTF with the next gun panic Benchmark powder will be the last one to become unavailable...

My thoughts.....Varget is for 223 & boolits 68 grains & up

With all due respect, Varget works great with 40-gr bullets and up in 223 Rem.

No one mentioned any Vihta Vouri powders. Are there any recommended for these 55 and under bullets?

Vitavhouri is well covered. N133-N140 work just fine. (Same as the N5xx powders).

I've been shooting Varget in my various 223's (all bolts and 12" twist) for many years with 50 and 55 grain bullets. It has shot extremely well in all my rifles producing 1/4 moa groups with my heavy barrel varmint rifles.

However, there are a number of other excellent choices for the 223. Some that I have used with equally great results are: IMR / H4895, Benchmark, and H335.

I want to load 50-55 grain for my bolt cation and AR-15 rifles. What is the best powder choice? There are powders that might be in less demand that I can find available. Is there a preferred powder I should look for to use in target shooting. 50 - 200 yards. I have a Bolt action 1:10 twist and AR rifle 1:8 twist. Lots of choices out there.
I have always found 748 to be very very good in my .222, and see that it would be ideal in the 223. 8208 is supposed to be very good also, I haven't tried it myself yet.

Yes, they're great. First you need to have some available and then, want to spend the money that VV demands for their product.

I've been able to obtain powders costing far less and in greater quantity than the VV powders and the perform very nicely.

IMR8208XBR, Accurate LT32, Varget and Reloader 7
Accurate LT32 and Reloader7 are available now at several sites - just ordered 5-Lb'ers of RL 7 at Third Generation Shooters Supply. LT32 is widely available in 1 lb and 8-lb if you look. I saw 8208XBR somewhere a few days ago. I bought 20 lbs. of Varget at Powder Valley three days ago after passing on the $30.00 that Cabela's wanted a few days prior. If you watch daily - you can get what you want when the opportunity is there. The Varget is usually gone in minutes if not a day or two - depending on who has it. Don't have time? Pay some kid a few bucks to watch for you. They live online.
