Varget for .284 Win?

I am having a new rifle made, .284 Win, to shoot F-Open in 2017. I will continue shooting F-T/R this year with the rifle I used last year and with which I had very acceptable results.

I plan to used Lapua 6.5-284 brass cases expanded to the straight 284. I also plan to use 180 gr bullets, albeit I have not decided yet what type.

From what I have read here in the AS-Forum, H4831SC and RL17 appear to be popular for the .284 Win and yield good results.

I currently have more Varget than I will probably use this year shooting F-T/R, and wondered if Varget for the .284 Win would work well, or is it more or less out of the question for match worthy performance?

Thanks!

I believe that you will find Varget too fast. I would try H4350 or 4831SC. Good shooting...James

Ditto . I find RL17 to be too temperature sensitive but I've had great results with 4831 in my .284

There are 3 powders that work VERY well in the .284 with 180 Class bullets. H4831/(SC), H4350 and IMR 7828SSC. All are ecellent but try H4831SC first, then IF it likes that burn rate range and you are not getting ALL you want, try 7828SSC. If your particular .284 does not like the H4831, try H4350. One of these powders will get you what you are looking for.

FWIW

Of the 12 powders Hodgdon lists for a 175-gr bullet (heaviest in their 284 Win data) Varget yields the lowest velocity, while generating near maximum pressure.

Thank you all for your replies!

I will start with H4831SC, which besides being promising, appears to be readily available.
