Varget and 105 Amax loads

I have been reading the form and I'am shooting 105 Amax at 30.5G of Varget and i haven't shot this load throught my Chrom.. yet but it shots very great. I see were some guys max is like 32.5G and others are about 30.4G of the same powder and bullet? Can their be that much differnce in rifle barrels? If you have a Varget load would you share it with me .Thanks Anthony awleaphart@bellsouth.net

I can't see anybody shooting 32.5 grains of Varget in a standard 6BR case--that is more like a Dasher load. I consider that a highly dangerous load, for 105s) in a 6BR with naked bullets.

FWIW, yes we've seen up to 1.2 grains difference from gun to gun to reach the same velocity in a 6BR. Keep in mind though, that chrons vary in their output--some are more optimistic than others. Still, I would say it's not unusual for one barrel to need 0.5-0.7 grains more than another barrel to reach the same velocity. That's why I always advocate that guys start low--29.0 grains or so with the 105-107gr bullets.

Guys who run moly or Danzac will also, normally, need more powder to reach the same pressures. And keep in mind that recent lots of Varget are not identical, so you have to tweak your load when you change powder lots.

LOAD: With a 105gr Lapua Scenar in a PacNor 3-groove barrel, I use 30.6gr Varget in the winter and 30.3gr in the summer. That produces about 2910 fps measured with a Shooting Chrony. Varget may be an "extreme" powder, but ambient temps DO make a difference.

Hi Baily, how you going mate?

Over here in OZ I use 29.9 of AR2208,varget) with the A-MAX set .020 of the lands to get around 2850 fps from my lilja 28 inch 8 twist . I have been to 32.0 but got pressure but the groups were great at 100 metres. I would think at 32.0 the velocity would be around 2950fps.
If our rifles are similar your load would proberly give me around 2880-2920fps

Hope this helps,
mitchell

30.2 grains for 105 copper Amax and 30.5 for 105 moly Amax bullets gets me 2850fps in a 28" 1:8 6-groove Barrel using lapua brass and BR4's
