Utah Prairie Dogs

I am quite sure that the Utah regulations are on-line, they would be your best source of information.

What I do when I am hunting out of state is print out the section of the regulation that is pertinent to what I am hunting and keep a copy of it handy. You never know when you may run into a game warden who is not up to date on the regs.

Prairie dogs in Utah have been legal. Just not Utah Prairie Dogs.

The "Utah Prairie Dog" is a sub species of prairie dog that was protected. I do not know if that has changed. I used to shoot prairie dogs in Utah, but they were not Utah Prairie Dogs.

I have not heard of the change, It has caused grief for friends building houses, Shops etc. Because they have to get a study done to see if you are on Prairie dog habitat.

This is in Iron County. My best friend just finished his shop, He got the permit in 2024.

Except the ones in Colorado. IIRC, those people have season, bag limits, and a ban on any hunting until the pups are out on their own.

I read that PD regulations in Utah have been changed as of 2023. Can they be hunted now?

For what I know….p/dogs on public land have a closed season from April 15-June 15…private property it’s 24-7 any day of the week…the dogs in SW Utah are protected because technically they are ‘Utah p /dogs’. Yes causes issues for building and yes airports too…public land p/dogs here are far a few in between…private irrigated property is where they are…so far this winter looking like a very dry stretch of weather

What makes the Utah species different from a regular one ?

I don't remember the specifics on how to determine which one is which, but Utah Prairie Dogs did not exist in the area I was hunting. I think they are only in one area.
