USS Alabama 16" Guns

The USS Alabama is tied up in Mobile Bay Alabama, just off interstate 10. Been there twice, well worth making a trip to visit her. Also, there is a Navy museum and a Submarine on display. visitors are allowed to tour the interiors of both the battleship and the submarine.

Love touring those old ships when ever I can, at various sites, if and where they are still available, and not sunk for reef structure out in the ocean. Thanks for sharing that.
I dove on the Aircraft Carrier Oriskany years ago after being scuttled she hit the bottom upright. The top of the conning tower was 80ft deep back then flight deck was 167ft. She is 45 miles off of Destin FL out in the gulf.

I saw the New Jersey's 16" HE projectiles go off a short distance from Dong Ha Air Base more than once. You could tell from a distance it was a whole different ball game in the artillery world. Not sure that I don't have some slides of the resulting cloud somewhere in the depths of boxes and boxes that no one wants to see.

The USS North Carolina is well kept. Been awhile since I've been on her. I remember as a kid getting to operate the 40 mm anti aircraft guns. Aimed them at the car grandma was sitting in because she lived all this and didn't have the legs for it.

Being from Arkansas, every trip to Pensacola or Gulf Shores required a trip to the Alabama. It wasn't until my 1988 trip that they had cut through the turret barbett to allow access there - you can see how thick it was - over a foot! Last time I was there just after Katrina, there was no peeling paint.

How about the uss razorback on the river in north little rock? Its a pretty cool tour

A few years ago I was in Norfolk and toured the USS Wisconsin. Unfortunately, the ship isn't open (at least not at that time), so you can only walk the deck. But just being on it was totally awe inspiring. If weapons of war can be considered beautiful, I think the Iowa class battleships certainly meet that standard.
