USPS money order advice

i bought a bat m bolt from a fellow member. I took pics of the usps mo and addressed envelope and sent it to him before mailing the mo. He has not recieved the mo and it has not been returned to me and it was mailed July 2nd. The post office personnel told me to file a missing money order form online but the usps website says I have to go to the post office and fill out a ps form 6401 which is a money order inquiry form. The post office gal said again it’s done all online. I’m getting no where fast with this. Does anyone have any first hand info that can help me out here? Thanks for any help/advice anyone can offer.
And also I’d like to give billy bob a shout out and a thank him publicly for being patient with this.

I am waiting on a mo that was mailed July 3, and still has not arrived. Not sure how I’m going to handle it. Good luck to you, from what I’ve heard the post office won’t be much help in the matter.

Demand to speak with the postmaster. And record the interaction.

8EDBE174-9BC7-4CE1-A073-AF198A8A7A42.jpeg As soon as I posted this thread the regional post master called me since I’d left my name and number at the post office. She said he was at the my local post office so I went down and talked to her. She gave me the ps form 6401. She asked how long it had been since it’s been lost I told her it was mailed July 2nd. She said Sorry but they won’t accept the form until 90 days after the money order was issued. So I guess I’m just out the money until the letter turns up or October 2nd when they will start the undoubtably long process of getting me a refund. Does anyone know if this is the legitimate process or if I’m just getting the run around? Any help is appreciated.

If you have the funds, send him another mo and then cancel the other one. Obviously let the seller know what's going on!

I gave up on postal money orders after having one lost in the mail. The replacement process was such a pain that I finally gave up and wrote it off as a learning experience.

I prefer receiving and sending a personal check. It’s much easier to deal with the bank at each end. When you receive the check, the bank can wire for information on the funds in the account. They won’t find the balance but whether the check is covered or not. You can also send or request a certified check and know the check is good. Actually, I prefer to receive a check.

What part of the country are you located? Some areas have been experiencing bad weather, closed roads and delays in all types of deliveries.

Here's a suggestion that will save you tons of grief esp. if you have a PayPal account.

Put your MO into a small bubble pack envelope along with enough light weight stuffing to make it at least 3/4 of an inch thick in one spot. Next go to www.paypal.com/shipnow where you can buy and print a shipping label and get free tracking. You DON'T need to have a transaction involving PP in order to do this. If nothing else at least you have a way to track the package.

my funny little money order story. Bought two money orders totaling $1400, paid cash in $100 bills. Went out to truck to fill them out. Put wrong name on the larger money order. Went back inside and asked to cancel money order and get another one. It had been 30 seconds since I bought the original ones.
The lady told me she didn't have that much money in her drawer. I said bullshit, she told me not to cuss, I said I just gave you 14 one hundred dollar bills 30 seconds ago. Having busted her in a lie in front of 6 customers she had no choice but to give me the money back and sell me another MO.
Have you ever tried to cash a postal money order at a post office? They always refuse to cash them here in Huntsville claiming they don't have enough money, no matter how small the amount is. They wont even open their money drawer to see if they have the funds to cash one. They are trained to never cash a money order.

One of the bennies of a MO is being able to cash them at any PO. Here they say that they can only give out what they have in their drawer. For large amounts contact the postmaster and tell him to have the cash available the next day. Remind him/her that they only took CASH when it was sold.

always use priority mail...cost more but you have tracking...and you can insure it...easy peezy

Why would you waste money to insure something that's 100% refundable if deemed lost? FWIW I believe there is or was a $5 fee to search for a missing MO. If you send it as I suggested you get tracking for /3 the cost of priority. I sent my amended return to the IRS in fresno that way.

Considering that U.S. government money orders go back to the stagecoach days, the 1870s, I'm surprised they're still being used. Personally, I look forward to the day when paper bills and metal coins are in the history books. Who knows, one could be carrying around Ebola in their wallets or pockets. YMMV.
