usps lost a rifle? ?

I don't trust anyone at the USPS anymore. Twice the post office, in their infinite wisdom has decided I had moved and quit delivering my mail. The last time it happened they marked my mail "VACANT" and returned it to the sender. I only found out what was going on when my bank called and said my statement had been returned marked "VACANT". That's when I called my Senator. I'm now getting my mail but, for how long this time.

I went through this same thing recently. Bit of advise...tell them that under federal law, a firearm must be reported stolen. And since USPS can't tell you where it is, it must be assumed stolen by a USPS worker. Inform them that you are going to involve the ATF. I did this, and it seemed to light a fire under someone butt, cause 2 days later, gun showed up.

We all have our own stories about why you dislike a shipping service. My best luck has been the USPS. Whomever you use, the packages need to be properly packed. Registered mail does document each hand that has touched a package. If a mistake was made on the amount of insurance, it is on your shoulders. They gave you a receipt and it is marked on the receipt. I won't go into my UPS rant.
I ship at least 5 items a week minimum and have for about 10 years. None have been lost, but one took a month for whatever reason.

I've been lucky with the USPS. Not so with UPS. Some years back I sent a 3 screw Ruger SuperBlackhawk for the trigger /hammer safety update. I had to ship it next day air. After Ruger did the update the sent it UPS. I got a call from Ruger saying the gun was destroyed by UPS's conveyor belt system. Ruger did send me a new gun but it wasn't the older 3 screw model.

I sent some antique model airplane engines thru fed ex, never made it stolen at the local office max. no one prosecuted. Wife called and complained about our local usps driver not getting out of her truck, supervisor told her he could not make the driver do her job! I work on postal vehicle every day, if you saw how they take care of their vehicles it easy to understand how packages get damaged. They are all the same I am afraid, you take your chances.

Funny thing about 3 screw Rugers and their perils in transit on the return back home from the factory. Yours is not the first I've heard of that was destroyed and happily replaced with a new Ruger.

A fresh, spanking-new reply to a thread about a lost package last discussed in June of 2013. Please keep me posted of any 2013 classifieds I might have missed too.

Why would you act like such an arrogant jerk to a new poster? Obviously he's been looking at old threads, so what? If you don't like it, simply ignore it and move on. Crap like this is part of the problem, not part of the solution.

Welcome aboard, Ricky!

Like Butch I have never had a problem with USPS, they even recently delivered a rifle that about 2 inches of the barrel was sticking out of the package (to clarify, it was not USPS fault the sender did a poor job of packing). Luckily nothing was damaged.

UPS - my luck was not so good. I sent a Kimber of Oregon 22 to a smith to have some work done on it unfortunately my experience with UPS did not turn out so good. I sent it packed in PVC tubing, well bubble wrapped, etc., it made it to the smith just fine. When it had not been returned in the promised time I called the smith, he said it had been shipped about 3 weeks before, he put out a tracer on it. A couple of weeks later I came home and there was a long cardboard about 6" by 6" setting on the front porch with no return address or any other marking on it. I shook it and could hear things rattling inside, I opened one end and turned it over so whatever was in could slide out, the first things that that fell out were pieces of PVC pipe, then the rifle came out. The rifle barrel was bent so badly you could actually see the bend in it, the tang looked like it had been worked over with a ball-peen hammer. I had the shipper file a claim which after some foot dragging UPS paid, sadly the shipper had only insured it for $300 rather than full value.

Taking it all together I have had one good incident with the USPS and one bad one with UPS so I run with USPS. I have shipped and received quite a few rifles with USPS and have never had an issue or lost item.
