Using my Lee .222 Collet Die

i like the die, but had to come up with my own way of using it. heres how i got it set. First remove your shellholder from the press that your going to use. then remove the collet from the die. then put a case in the shellholder and put the collet down over the case the way it will work in the press, with it in your hands. THEN note how far up the case (or down the neck)is setting in the collet, in my situation i had to add a .055 washer between the shell holder and collet to get the case where i wanted it to end up sitting in the collet. i slip this same washer over each case when i resize necks. it sets the case in the collet neck the same depth everytime, as long as the die is turned in far enough. even if i take the die out and put it back in. then put the die back together snugging the top nut on the die. no messing with this 1/8-1/4 turn stuff at all. none. then put the die in the press and turn in until more than enough contact is made with the shell holder so when the press handle is pushed down the collet will squeeze into the tapered cup.. then with a case in the press bring it up until you feel 25lbs or a close to that push and its done. i also give the brass a 1/8 turn and give it a second push. dosent take much to squeeze the neck against the mandrel. runouts are very very good. i dont think it takes 25 lbs of pressure but i have no way to measure that or even think i need to. and ive measured a lot of them and there .222 on the inside. again i like that die. someone tell me what im doing wrong:)

Easier to use the Valentine LCD method with a proper locking die nut so to set up your LCD just once and have repeatability each time you install it in the press......providing you have a cam over press.

i have a cam over press and see no reason at all to do that. how do you know how far the brass is going in the collet without visually seeing whats going on?

Lee instructions do not mention 1/8-1/4 turn stuff. I have read the Valentine method, but the Lee factory directions have always worked just perfect for me. I do size my 6.5 PRC brass in my 6.5 CM LCD using a grade 8 washer.

But if what you are doing works better for you, great and thanks for sharing.

It's a mandrel die. You really can't overdo it, unless you break something. Screw the die down until your press handle won't completely close, then give it a little squeeze...measure before and after, it doesn't take much of a squeeze.
Good luck

Just adjust the die as the instructions Lee provides and you should have no problems. The collet dies do adjust a might different that other dies do, to set up the sizing of the cartridge neck/shoulder.

if the collets touch the shoulder of the case, the mouth of the case will be above the collets.

As said..smoke the neck and you will see what is happening. 1/8 twist helps. I have given up on Lee collets..yeah they load straight and even on a cam over but the collets are made out of recycled stainless lawn chair frames and ginzu knives..it dosent take long for them to start getting indentations from the collar edges...and that is AFTER polishing the collets and collars with diamond paste to get rid of the ring machining ridges when you first get them. If you use a LCD then you need to own a 10x jewelers loupe to know when to switch to quality bushing dies.
Shame cause we would all be using that invention if Wilson etc were making them.I was a supporter of the LCD until I used them for a while.

As I said adjust per the instructions for your die, they should have come with the die purchase.
Otherwise, maybe you should buy a regular sizing die from one of the other die makers.

This is a result of the new improved (fucked up) design where the top of the collet has been opened slightly to aid in aligning projectile insertion.
The much loved and earlier collet design sized right to the end of the neck, well all the 6 LCD's I have do.
Yep, I ran into the same issue. If I have to buy one for a new cartridge I go to ebay and look for an old style one. Generally if it has the old hex style lock ring its good.

Keep lookout for this kind of stuff! This is a 6br die with 2 tho anvil. Well lubed and cleaned. Light cam over with Harrels c press that leaves no marks on the case neck.

i can see that happening in time, thanks.thats why i went with a 4 cent washer on the shellholder so i can just buy a standard collet again. instead of custom. have to ask the lee people if they offer a old style collet without the taper on the top. i really like what the die does and produces.

Actually the die isn't flared at the top the collet. It is shorter than the original ones. Same FU outcome I agree. Fix it till its broke I guess.

I wish I had bought spares before they changed the collet length.
I am using a .223 LCD (old style) machined down to allow full neck engagement with the 22 Nosler/22Nosgar case. The new style isn't long enough to cut down for the 22N. Turned mandrel down to give me neck I.D. I wanted, annealed brass, with some spring back. In this picture is my modified LCD, a 0.221+ pin that goes in, a 0.222+ pin that won't.
I use a 4 hole Lee Press and FEEL the case being sized.
I've had to polish the collet a few times and keep it lubed.

This die has OVER 3000 cases passed through it.
