Using citranox for a bore cleaner.

jonbearman

I live in new york state, how unfortunate !
I know this has been discussed a million times but I was wondering if any of you guys running ultrasonic cleaners using citranox cleaning agent have ever tried it in a stainless barrel to see if it would dissolve the carbon to avoid using JB or Iosso. I am just curious whether it would ruin a barrel or clean it and then flush with water or soapy water to neutralize the citranox. I was thinking it could be done on an old fireform barrel. What do you guys think. I have no citrnox at home yet but I wanted to put it out there as food for thought.

Re: CLEANING A CARBON FOULED BORE!

Jon, my ultrasonic cleaner is too small to clean a barrel, but I do use it along with Citranox to clean the brake each time I clean the rifle.

It's funny, I put the water / Citranox solution it it, drop the brake in, and when I flip the switch to ON carbon puffs out of all the holes in the brake immediately. I usually leave it in there for 15 minutes while I do the rest of the rifle cleaning, and it is completely clean when I take it out. It might be done sooner, but I will be busy with the rest of the rifle cleaning so it doesn't matter.

A good clear water rinse, and I blow it out with my compressor, grease the threads and back on she goes.

Re: CLEANING A CARBON FOULED BORE!

Jon, a high quality ultrasonic that is large enough to accept a rifle barrel is prohibitively expensive. It also takes up quite a bit of space.

PS: did this topic really deserve all caps and an exclamation mark?

Re: CLEANING A CARBON FOULED BORE!

it seems to me that Jon is asking if the liquid that is used in an ultrasonic cleaning bath culd be used as a bbl cleaner,,,,unless I red it rong,,,,Roger

Re: CLEANING A CARBON FOULED BORE!

People read things differently, but I took it that he's asking if anyone has tried the solution as a carbon remover. Not soaking the barrel in an ultrasonic cleaner.

Re: CLEANING A CARBON FOULED BORE!

Good call.

It might be worth trying out in a shot-out barrel. I'll stick with proven stuff for my barrels.

What I DID consider was buying a full-size ultrasonic to, basically, drop an AR, minus plastic parts, into with normal carbon removing solution. I looked into doing it as a small business. Polled friends and neighbors. Didn't seem to be enough interest to pay for the device.

Re: CLEANING A CARBON FOULED BORE!

I agree with expiper and Ringostar that he is just asking if anybody tried the cleaner solution in a barrel to see if it removed the carbon. I would think if it didn't hurt a brake it wouldn't hurt the barrel. Reading things wrong has caused a lot of arguments over the years. If you miss one word or read one wrong it can completely change the meaning. Matt

Re: CLEANING A CARBON FOULED BORE!

Good Question Jon............ Would it be possible to rig up a thing that would let just the chamber end stick into a small ultrasonic cleaner to help with the build up of the dreaded carbon ring that forms just ahead of the case mouth?

Re: CLEANING A CARBON FOULED BORE!

What about plugging one end of it and filling the bore up with C4 carbon remover, used to plug the chamber of factory barrels and fill them with Sweets to get the copper out, probably could do the same for carbon just plug the breech end.

Re: CLEANING A CARBON FOULED BORE!

I guess I wasn't clear enough on what I meant. What I should say is just using the citranox as a bore cleaner. I know no one except someone with loads of money could afford a ultrasonic cleaner to put a whole barrel in.

Re: CLEANING A CARBON FOULED BORE!

Jon, my thinking is that yes, Citranox does provide effective carbon removal from my brake... when used in an ultrasonic cleaner and diluted to the correct strength. That says nothing about how well it would work in a bore cleaning situation full strength and without the agitation provided by ultrasound.

I wouldn't do it, or test it on some crappy old fireforming barrel.

Re: Using ciranox for a bore cleaner.

Using a fireform barrel is what I suggested in my original post. I wish someone could try it and let us know how it worked and hopefully someone with access to a borescope.

Re: Using ciranox for a bore cleaner.

Citranox Technical Bulletin says its ok for Stainless. Maybe put some on the outside of the barrel for a while and see if it attacks it too much. I think it would not hurt the barrel. Try yours first and let us know.

Can someone try it on a junk barrel to see if soaking the bore would literally dissolve and wash it away? I hate to spend 50.00 a gallon just to try it if someone already has some.

I don't have a junk barrel other than the factory crappy one in my Savage .338 LM... but I am still using that one.

But you don't have to buy $50 worth either. I bought it on Amazon and it is about $24 for a 1 quart bottle. You normally use it mixed with water 2:100, so a quart goes a long way.

Michael, took your advice and found the quart to try. I will update or start a new thread once I get it.
