Using buckshot in new AA?

I don't believe the shot wad will work. I haven't loaded buckshot, but in the past I've load unknown number of birdshot loads for sporting clays. The other issue will be trying to open up the crimp and not mess it up. I'd just get the right stuff and do it correctly ..

Robert...

Yes. Shot that large as well as slugs give different pressure characteristics than birdshot. That's why the buckshot and slug data is separated (and different) in the shotgun loading manuals.

Would it be a bad idea to open up new AA ammo and replace the birdshot with buckshot if the weight is the same?

Thanks

How much time do you have. You will have to work long and hard to find an acceptable way to open the crimp, dump stuff out, stuff everything back in, then close it back and hold everything in. Firing the round first always seems to be the best way to open it up.

Even if you did get the shell open OK you probably will not be able to get more than 6 OO Buck in it because that wad is designed to hold 1 to 1 1/8 oz of bird shot. If you are thinking SHTF situation for self defense and only have on had bird shot shells just do like my grandfather taught me. Back during the depression era and during WWII if you had the money you still could not get buck shot or round ball (Punken ball) as he called them loads. You just made cut shells. Take a bird shot shell and just above where the powder is where the wad starts cut through the casing down to the wad half way around the shell leaving an uncut piece 1/16 of in inch and then cut the other way half way around leaving 1/16 inch uncut on the other side. This will hold the shell together. You have to single load these in the chamber. But when you fire them the front end of the case wad and shot go forward as one slug. When it impacts it hits kind of like a Glaser bullet does. Packs a slug impact and they the bird shot is expelled into what ever is shot. Grand Paw said that he killed deer, black bear, and hogs with cut shells. I have shot a lot of them but just at targets and stuff not living. It works. There are some YouTube video's on cut shells I have seen.
