User name

When i say that I own a bajillion guns, I dont really want some one to be able to get my address via google and my full name

As a former Military Pilot you will find that many of us were known by our Call Sign as often as we were by our name. You will usually find behind every Call Sign a great and usually funny story on how that Call Sign came about.

Back in the late 60's I worked in a small engine, saw, and lock shop. They had a full service machine and welding shop. I spent 4 summers working under the supervision of a master machinist. My first name is Nathaniel and I am called Nat, my fellow workers called me "Bug". We had a man bring in a 1929 Ford Model A engine block, all the studs to hold the head on were rusted off flush with the top of the block. I boiled out that block, inspected the cylinders for cracks, and the block was sound. I removed all the broken and rusted out studs with new studs. I bored the cylinders out .030" and when the customer came and picked it up he called me "Rustystud". The employer started calling me "Rustystud". I was on several Machining websites long before I was on any Gun/Shooting web sites. I started using "Rustystud" as a handle. I have always signed my post Nat or Nathaniel Lambeth. The handle has no sexual references, it was strictly from the old days working in a machine shop. Most people know my handle and it is in no way trying to hide my identity. You have to admit it is better than being called "Bug". Hope you have had your humor for the day.
Nat Lambeth

Mr. Nathaniel (Rustystud) Lambeth Sr. thanks for sharing, that is a good story.

I've been using online forums of one sort or another, for over 35 years now. Likely longer than most here (ha! I get to be the old timer on this thread). I have always used codenames, as this is the accepted norm (when in Rome, do as the Romans do...).

Yes, the internet offers anonymity. This is not a bad thing, in and of itself. Some people are liberated by this and come out of their shells in ways their in-person personality would never allow. Some people become jerk-holes. There are even some who are jerk-holes without anonymity.

The idea that a simple codename protects you in any way from being date-mined/tracked/hacked is simply not true. Anytime you use the internet you leave traces of yourself. All it takes is desire and talent to find you. For most of us, there is little desire by people with talent to do so.

I always enjoyed this forum because on the whole its pretty good about policing the jerk-holes. Most here are pretty rational and well spoken. There is a lot of fantastic wisdom available here, especially if you take the time to learn who really know's their stuff and who is just blowing smoke.

FWIW, my codename isn't all that hard to decipher. It's simply my last name spelled backwards. I've used it all these years because I have yet to encounter it's use by anybody else.

I've been using either my last name, or my initals plus my last name, as my 'screen' name for years. It's unique enough that it was never taken, and I think most people thought it was some kind of kool nickname or something.

What is surprising is the number of times that I've handed my card to the person scoring for me in a match, see them read the name, mentally connect the dots, and then hear them say "oh. So you're *that* guy..." I never know if thats a good thing or a bad thing ::)

A name is only a name. Sooner or later your true colors will be associated with that name . Anyone thinking they hide behind a nickname and act disrespectful to the rules of this site is a fool.

Well i plugged a 7x7 elk at a fair distance, when me and my buddy got over to him he said you boiler housed that sucker. Well kinda stuck with me. Bill Elliott

Mine goes back to the CB days when you had to have a license and "handle" for CBs to be legal.

Late 60s and early 70s made some big money (for a kid) shooting coyotes and getting $50 for a pair of ears at the County Clerks office.

We used to have a group that would run them in the winter with dogs and everyone had their handle.

Unless you had worked on or were working with ARPANET, CSNET or NSFNET you haven't been doing anything online for 35 years.

You might want to read what I said a little more closely before getting haughty...

I said "online forums of one sort or another". Before the internet was commonly available there was AOL. Before AOL there were BBSs. Before BBSs there were timeshares.

I was on all 'em. I spent the summer of '82 shoveling rocks to buy my first 300baud modem. Even wrote my own BBS system in '85.

So, yes I said 35 years, and I meant it.

My screen name comes from back when F-Class was just starting here in Minnesota. I never really gave it much of a thought but I use it on several forums. Dude was a derogatory name we used dating all the way back to elementary school when we witnessed someone doing something extraordinary. Whether a friend crashed in the moguls, or made a half court shot at the buzzer, we would use the same label. I really don't care what name a member uses.

I visit this forum nearly every day. I appreciate all the information here. Some do need to take a deep breath occasionally....
