Used brass hard to extract

LR_Shooter: GREAT photos! a picture is worth a thousand words. this topic is important, as i discovered years ago the brass from 22-250 alpha would not chamber in 22-250 beta and i could not figure out why. i'v learned more from this forum than all those years of trying this, then trying that. thanks.

By the way had anyone tried making small base die for 6BR from 308 FL die by shorting it to have inside diameter at the entrance of the die be same as your chamber, because I have 3 FL sizer dies for 308 and I can spare one to make small base die out of it.

Michael: I can't speak for others, but I use nothing but Imperial Die Sizing Wax. The area in question at the head of the case is extremely thick and as it tapers up in the direction of the case mouth retains a lot of that thickness. We're talking here about removing .002" or .003" at the most. Look at some brass that has been cut in half top to bottom & you will see how much brass is in the case head.

fdshuster, you probably right an the runout on the drill press is much smaller then in my cordless drill. When I put shell holder with the brass in my drill chuck, somehow my brass is off-center. So maybe its my cordless drill or its chuck who knows, all I'm saying I would probably better of with small base die then with my drill.

LR, are you still at it? As I mentioned 3 days ago, If that brass wasn't fire formed in your chamber, don't waste your time trying to make it work.

In the end, no matter what the fix, you still end up with used brass cylinders that are going to be subjected to extremely high pressures.

If you don't want to toss it, put it on the self as a reminder never to buy used brass again. Think of the cost as tuition. :)

Outdoorsman, I didn't buy it used, it just my factory Savage chamber ruined every single piece of it so I replaced its barrel and I bought new brass for it, but I have this reminder still seating on the shelf with tomato stake barrel which ruined it all.

I got some Norma brass in 6mm BR I think its slightly used, so I made few loads after FL sizing it, then I tried to chamber it, and it was a bit hard to close bolt, but extraction is almost impossible, I can open bolt up but can't pull it its like brass is frozen in my chamber. Slightly bumping it from the muzzle with cleaning rod works every time. Also after firing through my chamber it comes out with many rings from shoulders to the head...
I'll take some pictures so you can see.

LR,
Just saw your post so I'm getting into this one a little late. But I'd have to agree with Outdoorsman on this one. BUT....there is one thing I'd try first, go get a 6mm BODY DIE and lube the snot out of the casings and run a few of them through that die and then the FL Sizing Die. It is obvious you are having the typical problem of the casings having been sized in a loose chamber and your chamber is most likely a tight one, accounting for the differences. Because the "body" of the casings have been stretched, I'd antcipate a change in the shoulders after your run them throught the body die for a few strokes. SO you have FL size them again to get the shoulders back into specs. Just something to think about. Hope that works and good luck. BTW, since Lapua brass last so long in my 6mmbr, I'd never buy any "used' brass that was fired in any other rifle. It just isn't worth all the hassle you are having to endure. Just my thoughts.

Save yourself a lot of headaches and just throw it away and buy new Lapua.

Other options are crank the full length sizer down to the shell holder then a little more to over cam the press and try that.

If that dosen't work buy a small based die. No you can't make one out of a .308 die.

Or as said before throw that brass away and buy new Lapua.

Buy once, cry once. It's much simpler.

Danny

I'd toss it and start with new brass.

If you're set on reducing the base size, a 45 ACP f.l. die (non carbide) will reduce the base diameter. -Al

Toss it in the trash before you try one more internet trick and something bad happens.
If you owned a Lamborghini would you fill the engine with used oil from your F-250? ;D
Thats my best advice.

LR, If you always follow this simple rule, you'll eliminate a lot of headaches: NEVER use brass that was formed in one barrel's chamber in another barrel's chamber ... UNLESS the exact same reamer that was used in the first barrel, is also used in the second or subsequent barrels.

If you like a certain cartridge, and intend to shoot it over and over for years, like I do with my 6PPC and 30BR, then purchase the reamer for it, and have your gunsmith use it when he re-chambers your new barrels. They aren't much, about 138 dollars, as I recall, from Dave Kiff at Pacific Tool & Gauge: http://www.pacifictoolandgauge.com/ . When the reamer is used correctly, by a competent gunsmith, the reamer can last for years.

by the way, I made small base die out of 308 FL die and it works! It produces uniform diameter at the base 0.4709"
