Looking at that pic the hair around the bullet looks to have been pushed out, so it does look like the bullet came out on the off side backwards.

You think... No way that is bullet entrance. Also with a mushroom front, it wouldn't fall out no matter how much wiggle around.

The Eland has a hefty set of ribs..It's just possible that is what the (outside) bullet hit and never penetrated.

But we can't really know if that WAS a gut-shot impact? Likely, if the bullet "tumbled" thru the body, after impact, there's really no way to know the POI. Not without a picture of it, anyway
Just sayin', entrance wound could have been "good", and the bullet might have deflected off bone, plowed thru guts & came to rest offside, as shown. Looks like whatever amount of bullet tip expanded initially, is what's holding the bullet in place under the offside hide...

As for the other 3 "cookie cutter" holes, I've never seen such beautifully round perforations thru hair & skin, almost looks like a wadcutter!

So, assuming that IS the exit of a 'backwards' bullet, I'd say that bullet had enough energy to fully penetrate a broadside animal. And, that's just the wacky way the bullet 'tumbled' and exited 180° on the offside...

Would like to get more info on where the actual entrance wound was, as well as which bullet & what muzzle velocity.

The 6.5-284 with I'm guessing a 130-140 gr bullet is more than enough gun to penetrate SKIN at 1000 yards. I shoot a 6-284 with 105's and occasionally penetrate 3/8 STEEL at 1000 yards.

I run 130 VLD's at 3150 in a 26" tube, which carries 840 ft lbs
at 1000 yards.

It also runs 143 ABLR's at 2965.

Dependent on barrel length, you should easily be at 2950+ with 140's in a 26" tube.

Anyone ever shot a subsonic round to measure penetration? You will be VERY surprised at how much a subsonic round can penetrate. This round is going much faster than 1100fps at impact.

If you know the guide personally, ask him if this is the entrance or exit.

He should know which side of the animal was shot at, and which side the bullet picture was taken on.

That would answer a lot of these questions.

Guys, this was the entrance. My friend reports that he watched the vapor trail and then saw the dust and animal react to the impact. He couldn't see the definite location of the impact, but knew the animal was hit. They followed the specific animal for a few miles and crawled closer for the follow up shots. The bullet never penetrated the animal and mushroomed enough to not be able to be pulled out. I can see an X on the bottom of the bullet when looking at it on my phone, so a light 100 grain, low BC Barnes bullet could be the explanation. The bullet stopped on a rib. A light powder charge, and a poorly executed shot that would have missed high otherwise maybe explains slight penetration too. Without a doubt, the shot placement would have required a follow up shot regardless.

The same hunter shot a mule deer at 750 yards on same ranch, same rifle with my friend, the guide. Deer ran some distance before tipping.

My point with this post was that if you want to hunt game at longer distances, you should use enough gun (and a heavy bullet) to get the job done. BC trumps everything at distance, given adequate accuracy. The hunter was obviously a good marksman, just didn't have enough gun to get the job done.

This is one reason (I don't trust their expansion rates) I'm not fond of the "mono" type bullets...Give me a good bonded any day.

The Oryx skin was over a 1/4" thick not including the hair. The hide was thinner on my Colorado bull moose (which qualified for the SCI book) and much easier to cut. The Oryx is one tough animal, they live in the thorns. I used a 338 win mag ( 225 gr ) on my animal and I was a lot closer.

c. Bullet impacted a rib & stopped, as shown in pic

Those details added to the original post would have saved a crapload of supposition & straw grabbin' by the peanut gallery, myself included. Such a wacky-odd situation with so little initial info to go on, what else could be expected?
