US Rimfire Match Ammo

So who produced the last/most recent batch of military 22 rf training ammo and is it any good or not ?

As a compromise(price) I like the Norma tac22(black box). BIL and I picked up 9000 rds the other day. 3.50 ish/box. Now I need my own 100 yard rifle, searching for a HR M12.

I like the black box and expect to use it in my recently acquired U S PROPERTY marked Remington 513T that was made in 1940~!! Tac22 shoots accurately in my other .22 rimfires.

In the day, some companies had what I call "flagship products." These were made to tight degrees of quality and performance...think already mentioned Federal UM1 and UM1B for the 94 Olympics, which the US did very well; the Remington Model 37; the Winchester Model 70 and 52. They were given up when flocks of Harvard business and Wharton school grads hit the shooting industry's accounting departments.

Fortunately the concept still exists in Europe in the form of Anschutz, Hammerli, Feinwerkbau and others for rifles and Lapua, Eley and RWS for precision ammo.

I have lots of UM1B and some UM1 and the stuff is incredibly accurate when the rifle likes it.

If a company was losing money or losing profits on some of their products you can bet they were making it up somewhere else. Sometimes it was in keeping their workers underpaid.

There are 2 bricks of white boxed ammo on a local auction listed as milsurp Training ammo. I didn't get the lot numbers off yet but I'll get them if I can.

The sad fact is the capital required to even begin to try and produce match grade ammunition, the learning curve to use that equipment, and the cost of material that initally isn't match grade until they discover the "secret sauce", precludes American companies from making that commitment, unless there is a realistic chance of making a profit. Even if a company was able to meet all of these challenges at a price point that was profitable, they would still have competition from the established match grade producers. Would the small nitch market of shooters here in the US switch just because it was made in America, or would other non American shooters try and buy it. For some they would IF it out performed everything else. We all want the ammunition that performs the best in our rifles, country of origin be dammed. Federal tried and probably succeeded but still moved on.

Reminds me of the guy at our golf club back when the Senior Tour got going. He was about 45 years old and could shoot in the 70's on a good day and was thinking of quitting his job, playing and practicing every day and in 5 years he could be competitive. What he failed to see was that there were hundreds of guys his age who were already shooting competitive scores and they were all trying to get even better for that time 5 years ahead.
