? How good is Federal Ultra Match ammo?

I recently came into 1500 rounds of Federal Ulta Match ammo and being new to rimfire I'm not sure what I have. I plan on shooting tests with it, but what's the "overall opinion" of the Federal Ultra Match?

Thanks for your input.

Andy

Dave,

It is German made so that is helpful. I picked up RWS 50 to try as well. Looks like that will be uneventful. Thanks for your help.

ATTRUM,
Good purchase...BUT.....it'll boil down to whether YOUR PARTICULAR RIFLE likes it the best. You may be aware, but Rimfire Rifles are very particular about the ammo you feed them. I have an Anschutz that LOVES Federal Ultra Match UM22 beyond any other manufacturers ammo including all Eley, Lapua, RWS, Wolf, etc,etc or any other manufactured Rimfire ammo. I've tested them all and shot them in local competitions. It was always UM22 that won the shoots where I was shooting against guys shooting all sorts of custom rigs as well as across the counter rigs. But put UM22 in a custom rig like a friend's Hall, Sako, or Turbo action, the results weren't nearly as impressive as with Eley Tenex or even Eley Black. And Dave is right that Federal is now made in Germany at same company that (I've been told) makes Lapua Rimfire ammo's.

Make sure that is UM22 and if it is, if it does work in your rifle, give me a hollar and I'll take some of it off your hands. I'm down to 1500 rds myself and UM22 is hard to come by in most places.

Alex,

Thanks for all the info. I'll be shooting this out of an Anschutz Target 54 that I recently aquiresd from a close friend. It is a proven shooter with Tenex, but I couldn't pass up the deal on the UM22. If things don't pan out with the Federal I'll definitely give you a ring.

Thanks again,

Andy

Just curious to cost of this ammunition ? Grafs IF they had any is selling $17.99 p/bx, Gander Mtn down here (AL) has it for $24.99 !! That is what I paid for my last factory 308 match ! Yep, years &years ago.
BTW, this stuff is all they had in 22LR in solid projectiles, otherwise it was 2 different shotshell.
24.99 for 22LR. WOW !!

Will,
A year ago I was paying $14.99 per 50. Recently I paid $17.99 per 50. I've seen some onlime places trying to get $30 per 50 and that's a pure ripoff. It is extinct as well which is why I told Andy I'd buy it off him if his 54 doesn't like it. It's as rare as is all the other reloading components and ammo thanks to our wonderful leaders in Washington. I shoot mostly Lapua CenterX or Midas+ to practice and do that to save on my stock of UM22. Who know how long this BS will go on and the price once we can get it again.

I am planning on trying several different types of ammo in my rifle including the Federal UM. Here's a list of what I am starting with:

RWS 50
RWS 100
RWS target Match
Eley tenex
Remington/Eley (Black)
Lapua Midas
Federal Gold Match
Federal Ultra match

Let me know if I am wasting my time with any.

As for the cost of the Federal I picked it up for $200/500 that price included the governors portion.

Interesting, I have shot mostly LR 308 match so I keep back components that I know will work from year to year. Most of my 22 shooting has been casual. may have to invest in 2 bxs of that Fed just to see how it does in my 10/22.
Don't laugh, it has a Volquartsen barrel, Kidd trigger & bolt and a Leupold VARI-X III 4.5-14X50 LR scope on it. Scope may be over kill but works for me !
Thanks for info

Serious 22 rimfire benchrest shooter......between $100,000 and $200,000 worth of 22 LR ammo

Wonder if that's the defintion of an ULTRA SERIOUS RIMFIRE BENCHREST SHOOTER. Too rich for my blood or my wallet. I mean I have loads of fun Benchrest shooting but that much ammo? At what I've been paying for UM22 as of late, $200,000 would get me around 1117 Bricks (5,585 rds down the tube) of it. I'd need a shed or BIG safe to stack/store it all. Dave you can't be hurting for ammo!

Andy,
Unless you want to play (and can get them all), I'd jump straight to RWS Match and forget the other other RWS products. And as for the Remington/Eley Black, I could be wrong but I don't believe that is the same ammo as is Eley Black. Now they may have repackaged it and I haven't purchased any Eley Black in the last two years, but when I did, it was in a black box and did not read Remington/Eley as I've seen some folks have as of late. Dan Killough down at Killough Shooting Sports down in Texas usually has the Eley Tenex and Eley Black. As for the Lapua Midas, try and see if you can get a box of both Lapua Midas+ and Lapua CenterX. Holler at me if you need help finding either of those two, but Champion Shooters Supplies usually has those. Finally, I've never seen Federal Gold Match outshoot Federal Ultra Match in anyone's rifle.

Alex

Alex,

Thank you for your guidance on this matter. I can get around 2000 RWS target match reasonable. This is going to be fun getting this rifle together and running, but I cannot get over the expense a 22 can muster. I will keep you posed when the weather breaks and I can get to a bench for trigger time.

Kindest regards,

Andy
