Upside-Down Shooter

Look at this rest. The rifle is hanging from the top. This "upside-down" rest idea came from SavageDasher.

He shot like this today and WON best score in the 600 at Manatee.



Larry (SavageDasher) also won the attention of most shooters at the shoot. I mean you just look and look and look. Then it's more like ... "What the heck???"

Also "caught" him using something other than a Savage. Today he turned Manatee "upside-down".

Excellent work savage dasher!! I've been waiting for someone to try this since stock height has been a new way of advertising stocks. I wonder if a centerline on the barrel would be even better? Damn interesting idea !!

In Florida the sand is part of the ground. Nothing under that gun. It's "hung" from the top.

That's why it's booked as an IBS "Style" shoot. There are weight rules sometimes checked but essentially you shoot what you brung. It's fun, fun, fun without all the hassle of strict regulation.

Was that a gong match? I though you guys were following IBS HG rules for the Benchrest matches?

Our 600 yd IBS matches follow HG rules. If a shooter brings a non-conforming rifle they will be allowed to shoot the match but those scores will not be included in the official results. As for the front bag,
the rifle must rest on sand per front bag rules and dimensions.

Tom... Missed you. We don't really follow the rules. Some have guns out of weight. Many have no clue (like me) what the rules even are. We use equipment that we have and shoot what we brung. It's not for any sanctioned score but for the fun and experience Manatee, you, Steve and others offer to shooters.

If it was a sanctioned IBS shoot, obviously that's different. It's not and we are mostly not sanctioned shooters. If the shoot were limited to those that are both IBS members and follow the rules there would be few shooters as we have it set up now.

The Manatee web site states the 600 yard IBS "Club" rules shoot follows IBS Heavy Gun rules (as stated in post above by the match director). Some day you'll find yourself in big trouble when some shooter travels a considerable distance to shoot with the intention of shooting in an IBS sanctioned match. The LR barrels have a short competitive life span....I doubt many serious shooters will want to participate when they find out it is a "just for fun match". It appears to me you are making a mockery of sanctioned matches and have severely dashed any credibility of drawing shooters wanting to shoot same.

Boy am I "out of it" when it comes to understanding this match stuff.

I wrote and posted this as a tribute to the ingenuity of SavageDasher. Never had a clue there would be negative response to something I thought was shooting for fun.

I know nothing about IBS or any other sanctioning body. Do not belong to any benchrest shooting organization and would not have a clue how to even do it. I, like most all of the Manatee shooters I know, was introduced to the sport at the club, spent a pile of money and have learned and had fun, fun, fun shooting. Will admit I have seen some there discuss rules but other than weight, have no idea what they are or what compliance is. Personally I would join an organization and learn if there was a need to do so to continue shooting at Manatee. That is not the case right now.

Frankly, I only know two shooters there who have any involvement in sanctioned shooting. Both of them are on here. Would guess surely there are others around Manatee also. Just have no clue who they are. Most of us are like me. We built and tuned the rifles to shoot a couple Saturday's a month and thank people like Steve and Tom who make that opportunity available.

My take is if there were strict sanctioning rules most all of the shooters turning out would not show and the whole thing would come to an end.

I feel bad that my lack of understanding how some are so passionate on the rules issue ended up tainting the fun we had, this post, upsetting some and maybe discouraging SavageDasher from further participation.

I do not know how to remove an entire post with everyone's comments. Don't want to as I look at it as a disservice to some. Maybe I have no place staying involved in this kind of shooting? Sure know it's fun for me but maybe my fun negatively impacts on so many it's not welcome.

Also say "shucks" as I am now building a Stolle-actioned rifle to go along with the Savage I had built and learned to shoot at long range. It's a pile of money, time and effort that may turn out negative if shooting for fun is a bad thing.

You guys can sort out all the discord. If you can get a moderator to remove all this - fine. Me...I'm riding motorcycle to a local biker bar, fishing out of my boat this week, hunting, shooting and continuing to find ways to have fun decades into my retirement. I will be happy no matter what this is all about. Just hope SavageDasher is not negatively impacted. He's a real nice guy.

A question about the setup, is there anything that restrains sideways movement of the front of the rifle? Given that this is obviously a non sanctioned match, with few rules, I love the out of the box thinking.

Added a little later: Is the bottom of the keel that has been added to the buttstock parallel to the bore?

^^^^^Nothing "obvious" about it.....What constitutes an IBS "Club" Match run under IBS HG rules as advertised on the clubs website? Manatee is listed as an IBS sanctioned club. Maybe to a veteran match competitor it might be obvious. But with a mere 13 year sanctioned match regular, I find it deceitful.

Steve made my day.
He took my Grand Son Cory under his wing. A 11 year boy need someone like STEVE for a Mentor .Steve helped him load and sight in. Steve also took him to set up targets and take down. Then Steve had him help score explain every thing along the way. THANKS STEVE.

THAT is the crux of the problem.....remember when you posted an upcoming "IBS match at Manatee" and I called you on it ...if it was Registered? Your reply was to the effect " I don't even want to be affiliated with the IBS even if asked to join."
Delete the reference to IBS, NBRSA, NASCAR or whatever and go on having your fun shooting against whatever competitors you can muster with no rules at a $15 top shooter award with no regional or national recognition.

I remember very well. Do you. But the main part was about was about the gun and had nothing to do with IBS. If you feel you want to discuss that start your own POST Larry

7 shooters turn up on a Holiday weekend to shoot. I will change the title of all future paper matches at Manatee to read paper matches. No reference at all to IBS. We are in the process of moving any competitions to a newly extended 600 yard separate bench rest range. Can you guys imagine having to hold "any kind" of match an a open to the general public range shooting bench guns 6' away from a 50 cal? We are trying to introduce members to more structured events. Moving away from the public line is the first step.

Sorry if I was a part of such a flap about nothing. I respect most all comments made on this site.

FWIW - I checked the IBS Official Rules of Competition......under Art. 3 sect.A there are 2 types of tournaments a) registered and b) unregistered. If you are recognized as an IBS affiliate club the only change would be to add "unregistered" to the web site listing. Nowhere in the rules is there a reference to "club" matches. I'll delete my previous post about removing any reference to IBS.

I deleted my original response to you after thinking about this. The reason for the need to be very clear about the match being registered or UNregistered is that the IBS is structured to recognize the very best shooters by using a point system. Points are only awarded for contesting Registered Tournaments as well as recognition for record purposes. Precision Rifleman as well as Shooter of the Year stats are maintained as well as strict documentation for recognition of National Records. Most veteran shooters will consult the IBS match schedule to plan which venues to contest. It would not be out of the realm of possibility to have a new shooter unfamiliar with the published match schedule to plan a trip to Mantee simply by reading about it here on Accurate Shooter thinking the match was indeed registered.
I'm a little surprised at how little you know about registered competition. When I was finally able to pursue BR after years of family obligations and monetary reasons, I spent hours researching it on the web, particularly the IBS which most clubs hosting BR in my area are affiliated with.
