So sad of a policy. No reason for it.That has been UPS policy for a long time now. Some people don't pay attention to it or the employees don't know their own policy.. but I've paid overnight for the last 10 years or so when shipping a handgun.
Two options to pay less than the overnight option for handguns:To those that are unaware, our last vestige of shipping firearms is getting bad. If you want to ship a handgun UPS gives you one option. OVERNIGHT ONLY! That takes normal shipping from $25 to $140 just like that.
Wish more dealers would sign up for Shipmygun. Two options to pay less than the overnight option for handguns:
1. Use shipmygun.com This is a branch of Bud's Guns and they have a provision to allow you to ship your handgun 2'nd day via UPS.
2. Use your local FFL. I use mine and ship using USPS Priority mail. Yes, I do have to pay my FFL a $35 fee for their service + the actual cost of a medium Flat Rate Priority box. But I'm still just right at $50.
The lower is the only thing legally considered a firearm. You can get uppers shipped straight to your door. But in your example, it would be considered sending a firearm since you are shipping the lower as well.So if I separate a multi AR lower, is it a pistol or rifle ? What if I ship a 7” upper and a 16” upper with that lower ? What is it? So messed up
The reason is that the handguns are easily stolen from the much slower ground operations. I worked for UPS when this was implemented. UPS had a bunch of handguns stolen by an organized theft ring. This was UPS’s best solution at the time. It wasn’t a good idea IMO but that’s where the air only for handguns came from.So sad of a policy. No reason for it.
They only stole handguns there were being shipped by non-licensed individuals? Because the overnight does not apply to FFL's.UPS had a bunch of handguns stolen by an organized theft ring. Actually there is a reason, think about it, the longer it is in the hands of someone else the more likely it is to get stolen. This is the part that is sad, they are just minimizing the amount of time it could "wander off".So sad of a policy. No reason for it.
I believe they were stealing handguns being shipped by S&W but I’m not positive. Yes there is some theft issues at all of the major shippers. Gangs target them by members getting jobs and working from the inside. The Atlanta , Chicago and the California hubs have been repeatedly infiltrated that I’m aware of. Anywhere with strong gangs are vulnerable. They only stole handguns there were being shipped by non-licensed individuals? Because the overnight does not apply to FFL's.

The law says you must notify the shipper that it is a firearm and cannot ship a handgun USPS unless you are licensed. Then UPS/Fedex can set their own rules.I thought pistols had to be shipped one day according to atf rules for some reason....
