Update on Today's Cleaning Solutions

Hello! As I have mentioned before, I have been away from rifle shooting for the last 10 years (kids) and I am now getting back into it (and taking the kids with me!). I used to use Shooter's Choice mixed with some Kroil for the bore and the occasional Sweets for cooper. I also have some JB's Bore Paste and never really got into using it. I see so many new products out and was wondering what is the word on these new products?

Thank you!

Andy

Wipe-Out/Patch-Out with their accelerator works well for copper. For carbon I have tried Iosso and JB and they both are effective. Lately thought I have been using Remington 40-X bore cleaner and it seems very similar to old Gold Medallion. Its kind of like a liquid JB. Its easier to apply and doesn't seem quite as aggressive as JB IMO.

Start with the least intrusive cleaning regimen your barrel likes. Understand that it may be counter-productive to clean down to bare steel every time. Be cautious in the use of any abrasive cleaners. Resist the temptation to mix and match solvents to create your own witches' brew.

Some barrels clean easier than others. If you are not in a hurry to clean between competition stages, let dwell time (appropriate to the particular solvent you are using) work in your favor rather that aggressive sawing of brushes back and forth in your barrels.

Before you adopt an aggressive cleaning regime, shoot the gun until you actually see evidence that fouling is harming accuracy. This could be 20 rounds, or 40, or 80. You won't know until you test. Short-range shooters tend to clean more often, long-range shooters less so. But it is not unusual for quality modern barrels to hold excellent accuracy for 35 rounds or more.

Always, always use a proper-fitting cleaning rod guide. We advocate not drawing dirty bronze brushes backward over the muzzle crown, but some experienced shooters believe this doesn't matter. We are only passing on the advice of leading barrel makers such as Tim North (Broughton) and John Krieger (Krieger Barrels).
