Unusual Scope. What is it?

So a customer brought an FN rifle in .270 into my grandson's gunshop, looking to replace the scope. He got the rifle from his dad who passed away a number of years ago. Grandson asked me, and in my opinion the customer should leave it alone and use it as it is. It's a great periood piece. I took some pics. Does anyone know what it is, or anything about it? It has what I believe is a German #3 reticel (like an upside down duplex "T". It's patina matches the rifle - may be from the 40's or early 50'? Any help is appreciated!

A German Hensoldt Ziel scope. I agree... I wouldn't change it either.

Very nice older set-up. Glass is probably crystal clear. Don't change a thing.

I agree! eye relief is terrible..maybe 1-1.5"

The mounts are interesting, looks like a dove tail base soldered on the barrel
and the rear might have elevation and windage. Pretty cool stuff!!

the dovetail is rather large - much larger than the 11mm one finds on rimfire rifles. What looks like elevation/windage on the rear mount is a quick release mechanism. Still, I find the whole scope/mount pretty cool.

The owner might be better served buying a modern rifle in .270 with a proper scope if he is looking for a deer rifle, and keep this one "as is" as a family heirloom. Just my opinion.

If they cut their eye with this rig there's a good bet they shouldn't be shooting. It's a frigging 270 for God's sake!
I'd make a range princess out of both the rifle and scope!

Tell him I will trade him a savage axis for his rifle. In what ever caliber he wants and I'll put a vortex scope on it

Those look very much like claw mounts, popular in Europe. On the rear base there are ribbed sliders on both sides. Pull them back at the same time and lift up on the rear of the scope. The scope should lift right off the rifle. The front ring has one or two claws that hook into the front base. That's why the ring is on the objective housing so the scope can tip up and the objective not hit the barrel.

They return to zero very well.

great info! I'm going to clean the rifle tomorrow for the customer and will try this out.

I agree with your comment that the customer should leave it as is and shoot/hunt with it. He probably will not shoot it all that much anyway, deer/bear hunting and sight in, so just keep it as is and enjoy a fine old bit of history.

If they Are claw mounts you can get rings made to fit other scopes, it is spendy. I made a set to fit a low mounted straight tube scope to my drilling. Now I have the original high mounted scope and the low mounted scope it changes the whole dynamics of the rifle taking it from being suitable for a high house blind to handling like a DGR.
