Unique 700 stock project

I started cleaning everything up, then I pull all the tape off the stock while the bedding is still wet. Those bolt release and ejection port corners were consistently getting mud in the corners, under the tape. Solved that problem.

I’ve also been using that clear high temp tape over putty.

This is how I cut mine in. Mill a 9/16" hole strait thru just in front of where the bolt stops. Then I move forward to the mouth of the case when attached to the bolt extractor. Then I just milled down and move back and mill farther down till I get back to the hole. Then I clean up the "arc" or "ramp" with the fordom machine till the drop out smooth.
Very nicely done. :) -Al

Finishing up some final stuff. After the cleanup, edge radiusing and chamfering the screw holes, the bedding checked out really well. Using Ted Hunter's nifty bedding checker, it shows .001 movement when either the front or rear screw is cracked loose.

Another detail addressed was the scope bases. The Ken Farrell steel bases that had been used on the action are well made and pretty stout. Since this gun is going to have a NF BR series 12-42 on it (37 oz.), checking how the bases fit the receiver was on my to-do list. Removing the bases from the receiver and looking at the contact patterns showed all was not as it should be, due to the variances of 700 receiver dimensions.

The bases were bedded to the receiver and now have virtually 100% contact.

It's headed to the wilds of interior Iowa this weekend where Mike Bigelow will fit a K&P 1:18 with the owners new 1.875" .30 cal. case with (JGS reamer designed for him by Randy Robinett). It should be up and runnin' next week. All in all, a pretty fun project that quite a few pals will have rubbed their hands on when it's done. To me, this is the kind of stuff that makes BR fun, enjoyable.....and meaningful.

Good shootin' :) -Al
