un-burned powder left in barrel

Loaded some rounds for my 30-30, 150grn Interlocks over 34grns of IMR4350 with CCI 200 primers.

This is well below max as listed in my Speer manual for this powder.

Rifle shot very well, accuracy was good, bolt closed easily.

After the first three shot group I removed the bolt to let the barrel cool, as I was looking down the barrel from the breech I noticed what looked like 6-7 individual grains of powder in the barrel. Tapped and blew down the barrel to get them out. They were scorched but still whole.

My guess is that IMR4350 is slow enough that it just wasn't burning all the way before the bullet cleared the neck?

Find a barrel that is four feet longer or switch to a faster burning powder.

In electrical terms, you need a faster wattage powder with less burning resistance. ::)

DaveBerg, how do you come up with 80%? Is there a formula for this? Not disputing the number, just interested in the process.

I have a Winchester 94 Trapper Model with a 16 1/2 inch barrel and with IMR-3031 and 150 grain bullets I had unburned powder left in the bore.

A double base powders like WW748 or BL-C(2) work well in my short barrel 30-30, I also use magnum primers with ball powder.
