Ultra Light Stock recommendations

Texas

Silver $$ Contributor
I have the itch to have a new gun built. Currently I have all custom, heavy guns. I want to build an ultra light mountain rifle. I know nothing about this arena. I need recommendations for a very light stock, one weighed in ounces not pounds. I want a stiff, high quality stock. It will have pillars and proper bedding added. Are they made from fiberglass, carbon fiber, etc ?

I’d appreciate any feedback, web links or opinions.

Also, is it worth looking at carbon fiber barrels or should I just get a shorter barrel?
I haven’t had much luck getting accuracy from thin barrels.

Thanks in advance.

I’d buy a COTS rifle first so you can get an idea of what you want and need. The Barrett is very popular and good. Kimber Montana too. If you design from the ground up in an arena you have no knowledge in it would be like building your dream heavy gun having never shot one.

McMillan and Manners are very popular though. Brown precision very very good. Heck a bell and Carlson Alaskan TI works too.

I got one for my first build have a Krieger barrel and swafa 4x16, saving for an action.

I agree with Prose advice above, and several of the rifles mentioned in various posts above are good candidates. I got a similar hankering years ago and didn't want to spend the price of the commercial standard at that time, the Winchester model 70 lightweight. I wanted a .257 Roberts and decided it was also time for a mountain rifle; I ended up with a Ruger 77 MK II lightweight model (long since out of production) in .257 Bob. It has a very slim 20" tapered barrel and a walnut stock and looks for all the world like a 3/4 sized rifle in the safe with the varmint rifles and the regular hunting rifles. With a K4 Weaver scope it weighs exactly 7.4 lbs, so with an appropriate composite stock from McMillan, Manners, Brown Precision, etc, getting the complete rifle under 7 lbs should be no problem; 6.1-6.2 pounds with a suitably tapered barrel in the 18"-20" range and a carefully chosen composite stock should be relatively easily reachable before scope installation. Just some thoughts to give you an idea of what is possible without really serious efforts at max lightening.

FWIW,
You did not ask for this, however, I would strongly consider letting Melvin Forbes, of New Ultra Light Arms, build the entire thing. You can't beat what he does putting a light stock on a factory action. About the only downside to Melvin these days is that he has gotten a wee bit grouchy... Maybe a little more than a wee bit...;-). Still the finest ultralight rifle. IMHO.

Regards, Matt.

FWIW(again),
I've been thinking about a Model 20 in .260 Rem AI, 7mm-08 Rem AI, or maybe his favorite .284 Winchester. You've got a 3" magazine to work with... Would spend the $68 on the stainless barrel. It worked well on my 20 short in .223 Remington.
"Model 20

(The Ultimate Mountain Rifle) This rifle is built on an intermediate length action. It is designed for exceptional accuracy with .308 class cartridges, while maintaining extreme lightweight. The action weighs a modest 20 ounces, and the finished rifle is only 5 pounds.* The Ultimate Mountain rifle is available in all .308 length cartridges, including the .284 Winchester. A three-inch magazine is featured to allow extra versatility for load development. $3,500 (add $ 100 for left hand)"

With no experience and a desire to own a fine firearm in a lightweight rendition, I would call Melvin Forbes and let him handle the entire project start to finish.

If, however, I could source out the parts properly (maybe with some guidance:rolleyes:), then deliver those to a top-of-the-line gunsmith, I would be just as satisfied with that decision.

Remember that Proof Research also owns a stock making company which specializes in lightweight, strong offerings:

I have a High-Tech stock that is very nice for an ultra light stock. Requires some work to finish, but comes in at about 20 oz ready to roll. Just a thought. :D:D

Ultra light rifle chamber in a 7 mag should do the deed, not sure if (I ) would want to shoot the beast.
