ultimate 20 cal long range rig

Guys that is an interesting discussion and I had thought about a 20 cal long range rig, but scrapped the idea when I saw Berger was no longer making the 55 gr 20 cal bullets. Then I see the Graf link in this discussion and they have the 55 gr bullets, so the 20 cal long range rig is back on the table! Good news! I would give a hard look at using the 204 with a fast twist barrel as one option, as Farmer 44 is saying, for all the reasons he says. Great discussion.

My choice would be a 20x47 or a 20 Dasher or BR variant.

If it doesn’t have to feed it gives a guy a lot of options.
I’ve had a 20-250 (twice) and a 20BR and they were loads of fun.

Don’t know about the barrel burning.. I got 600 rds on mine.
Powder choices for 20BRAI-
RL -15
203B
8208
H 4895

with the 55gr Berger
I chose the 205GM FED primer...

That little 204 ruger ain’t gonna cut it at 600yds w/ a 40 gr bullet...

I ran an 8 twist 204 with 50s and 55s for a couple years. 24” barrel would run the 55s at 3300 pushed hard with H4895 but it was still not that impressive past 500.

A 75 from a .224 is a vast improvement.

204 was fun out to there but too much hassle when a guy can go to the bigger cases for a 20cal rig.

20 GT--build one, use it, then write it up for us retired folk to read about.

It's amazing what's come to the table in just the few years since this thread was started.
Lapua now is making 6 Dasher and 6 GT, 2 great cases to form down to 20 without fireforming and all you really would need for the Berger 55. Heck maybe in the next couple of years we will see a 20 caliber ELD-VT that rivals the 55 for distant varmints.

Me could hope, I have a pile of the 55 gr Bergers, bought some when they topped making them and another 1k from Grafs a couple weeks thanks to a heads up, from you I believe. 20 GT reamer is delivered, should have it in about a year, still need to ordered the action and barrel. Probably gonna use a Kauger elite.

It’s shame their offering 6dasher brass, only 10-15yrs too late.. Ive been on the BRAI wagon since ‘05

They quit the 221FB, expect it for the dasher..as the GT , I believe it’s gonna stay..

Too bad they can’t keep current offerings instock..

Nakneker, where did you order reamer from ??

I got my resize 20-221AI reamer from JGS already, soon to have complete 20PPCAI complete set w/ gauge also.. in couple weeks..like 5/6 week turnaround…

JGS. They make it easy, great reamers too. Sounds like you already know all that though.. Lol.

What bullet you plan on using for the 20ppc ai?

Bib 40 out of 1-8” hopefully

-try 55 only at 100yds& 200yd group competition only
Or the 32’s at blistering speeds…

Competition barrel only..

Just gotta test & see what beats the wind…over a 6ppc…‍;)
What speeds are you thinking for the 55?

I've never gone down the BR road but I know there are many different "improved" variants of the BR case. For those of you that have what is the difference between a Dasher and a BRAI do they both have a 40° but the body or neck length is different on them or ???

The dasher moves the shoulder forward .080 while the bra just blows out to 40 degree’s. Overall length is the same so the bra has a longer neck, where the dasher has slightly increased case capacity. Forming bra is easier then dasher but with factory offerings from multiple manufacturers now it’s doesn’t make much of a difference. Both are extremely accurate. The long range benchrest crowd is dominating with the bra, while the PRS crowd seem to favour the dasher for the slightly added velocities

You may want to check out another of Todd Kindler's developed cartridges, the 20 Titan.
Based on the 6.5 Grendel case. I have built 2 of them. One is a Douglas barrel on a Savage target action.
The other is a Krieger barreled Remington action. You'll need a PPC bolt faced bolt.
The Titan pushes the 55 grain bullet from 3600 to 3850 fps. Superior accuracy out passed 1000 yds.

If you have a 20 Vartarg, the cartridge forming process is very similar.
Hi,
I have a Titan, pushing 55 grain Bergers, 1 in 7 twist, and I find that the speeds quoted exceed the 50,000 PSI capacity of the brass used.
I have turned necks and had to restrict loads to the 50,000 threshold to be able to reload the brass.
How do you achieve those speeds, without excessive pressures, and stretching primer pockets?
At 3000FPS - 50,000 PSI published data shows it is still comparable to the 300 Win-Mag for drop and drift.

I like to keep speeds to less than 4000FPS ( Speed is not everything! ) as I find the barrels last longer, especially in a hot climate.
My Vartarg at 3600FPS in 1 in 8 twist pushing 40 grain projectiles is a great rifle also, it has great accuracy up to 300m and is fine with multiple shots without overheating and causing excessive barrel wear.
