Type S die and neck sizing

I’m working with a Redding Type S Neck die, Norma Cases in 300WSM. Expander ball on die is .3065; neck bushing is .332", neck thickness is .017" turned and .024" unturned. I would like to work with unturned necks as this batch of brass is very consistant.

When I neck size the unturned case, the expander ball first expands the inside to .3065" and outside to .3545" (.3065" + (2*.024")) then the neck die reduces it to .332". Good so far! Now we lower the press ram and the case goes past the expander ball blowing it back out!??

Did I miss a line in the instructions? Doesn’t this Exercise the brass too much and work harden it? Should I take the expander ball off or cut the stem off? I know that brass has a memory (spring back) but, belling it out, squeezing it down and then belling it out again seems wrong.

The object was to achieve a .002" neck tension on a .307" bullet.

check all your measurements...please

I dont know what is going on ,,but ,,,the Winchester WSM brasss that I have is aprox~.0145" thick in the neck ....yours is wayy bigger ....what is your chamber neck...can a bullet be slipped into a fired case without (before sizing) any/much tension...with your fingers....
The type S dies usually come with a decapping pin holder that is smaller than the expander ball/decapping pin holder,,,usually this is installed and with the correct bushing the case and case neck are re-sized and when the decapping assy. is withdrawn it does NOT expand the neck (or even touch the insided of the case neck..) ....check things out and take some more measurement....go slow....Roger

Load a bullet into your brass (you can pull it with an impact bullet puller later) and measure the diameter at the neck. Subtract .002"-.003" if loading from a magazine or .001" if single loading. Which ever way you go use that size bushing and stop using the expander ball. Install the collet nut to hold the pin and you are ready to go. This is in the instruction sheet with the dies.

Ok.. Bad operator techinique...home made tool, have to hold your mouth just right.
unturned neck wall = .016"
turned neck wall = .015
expander ball .307

bullet free falls into a fired case.... free fall may not be correct... no restance may be a better term.

necked down a case.. seated a bullet and result was .338... should have been .340???

Sooo I should be using a .336 ring right?

Yes magazine feed.... Hunting Rifle... whole point is hunting rifles need to be accurate too. Can't eat what you don't hit.
