two savage questions

What torque screws do you measure to find out the spacing
How to tell if it is a large or small barrel shank

The furthest two screws. I believe it’s either 4.4 or 3.44. 3 screw makes it a target action which is large shank. Large shank will have a shorter barrel nut vs small shank. Small is 1.055 large is 1.120 diameter.

Bare receiver or barreled action>
Screw spacing: From the hole forward of the mag cutout (in the front section of the threads,
to the screw hole just in front of the sear hanger.

Small shank has a longer barrel nut.
Ha, day late and a dollar short here:)

Depending on when the action was made will determine the screw spacing. The early lrp actions had the 4.4 spacing but later ones were 3.44" and some stayed the same 4.4" You just need to measure. And have fun finding stocks

With it being a target action it will be a large shank.
For the screw spacing measure the screw hole closest to the trigger to the one closest to the recoil lug. It will be either 3.40” or 4.40”.
You have to measure. Nothing (serial number, caliber etc) guarantees anything
There are more than 2 distances but it doesn’t matter. 3 second measurement with a child’s ruler……. well it will save you grief and money. Not even Effie Sullivan ( the high priestess of the Savage shop) could tell you.

If it's a 3 screw, McMillan makes high quality stocks for it. Pricey, but excellent stocks.

one other question is this a long or short action ?
Considered a short when you buy a base but it has a long port. I can extract loaded .284 180 Hybrids loaded long with mine. There are plenty of stocks for the 4.41 actions and almost zero for the 3.40

it is a target action but has a 7/8th barrel nut
Is your rifle a single shot? I’m thinking if it’s a 7/8 barrel nut you probably only have two action screws.

If it’s a target action when you flip the gun over the stock should have 4 screws. 3 for the action and one for the trigger guard retaining.
