Twist rate for 30-06

Gents,

I've got a rock creek barrel from a 308 build from years ago. Twist is 11.25. how do you all think it will work being rechambered for 30-06 and shooting factory 150gr. ball? Barrel is 22"long, for what it's worth.

We dodged a bullet last night.

11.25 twist can handle, depending on bullet design, up to 185 grain pretty easily.
I shot tons of 175 SMK in 12 twist at long ranges and they stabilized just fine.

Many moons ago the AMU determined that 1 in 11.5 was optimal for 168 grain match boat tails in the M-14. They had Maremont make up a bunch of heavy match barrels and I was lucky enough to get one on my M1A at the time. It shot fantastic. Hook Boutin gave me the barrel and glass bedded it. The rifle and him are both gone now.
I have always heard it said that you want the slowest twist that will still stabilize the bullet for best accuracy...that said I have always over done it and ran 1 in 10 in my other 30 cal rifles, but the one you have should work great.

Gents,

Thanks for the replies. Now to trade off the Eddystone for the Rem 700. Anyone in the OK area, see you at Wannamaker's tomorrow.
I'll be around the Patton's Powder Keg Table.

Berger has a stability calculator, along with applied ballistics has one in the trajectory calculator.

Keep it above 1.5 SG and you can shoot anything.

Please note that the .308 chamber profile is fatter in the shoulder area than the .30-'06 at the same height above the cartridge base. So you can't just ream the .308 with the .30-'06 chamber reamer. The .308 chamber, or most of it, must be cut from the barrel before reaming to .30-'06 spec.

Greg,

Thanks for the info. A shame, I'd really like to use this barrel on something and I already have two 308's that are perfect so I don't need a third. Wait, maybe I do. Even so, I know I need another 30-06.

Depending on the barrel's profile, you might be able to shorten the barrel enough at the chamber to rechamber it for .30-'06. Recall that the Navy converted M1 Garands to .308 by inserting a filler into the mil-spec .30-'06 chamber. My back-of-the-envelope calculations (which may be wrong) tell me that the barrel set-back needed would be less than 1/10". YMMV.

Tried it this morning. Stuck a 30-06 round into the 308 barrel and it rattled around like a BB in a bucket. 308 round? Like a glove. Guess I'll be putting this barrel in the classifieds. Too bad, it's from Rock Creek, back when Mike Rock was still there - 2008 was when I got this barrel.

Knowledge like this is why I'm on this forum. Thanks, gents.
