turning 284 brass

Guys, I have a .284 and i am going to start turning the necks on expanded 6.5x284 brass. Since my winchester brass will only hold a primer for about 2-3 firings, i feel i have no other choice. I have read all about the donuts that will most likely form, so i want to do it right and just turn the necks from the get go and avoid them…hopefully. I have a .317 neck, so my question is, How far can/should I turn the necks down to?

Thanks, mason

Seat a bullet half way in the neck and measure the diameter of the neck at the pressure ring of the bullet. I'd shoot for .003-.004 clearance. .313-.314 load round at the pressure ring of the bullet. Turn the brass until you get there.

With a 317 neck you dont need to turn the brass at all. Its a no turn neck in a 284 using lapua brass. If your worried about donuts you can inside neck ream, and/or just size the top 2/3rds of the neck so the donut isnt pushed into any position where it could touch the projectile.

I turn necks down to the point where the cutter leaves a surface cut impression on the shoulder at the neck/shoulder junction, without making any deep cuts into the shoulder itself.
