Tuning and Bullet holes

Somewhere on this forum I posted a pick like yours asking about the smaller holes and uniform black around them.
I still do not fully understand it.

This is how I see it. I do not think there is any value in chasing target bullet hole shape nodes. If you wanted to, you would need clean targets, backers, and angle of entry for every session. Testing should always be apples to apples, not sure there is any way you could really do that and really make any difference by tuning “bullet hole” shape. I think it is just a classic case of overthinking, but hey, if it gives someone something to do, it’s all good!

I believe Tony Boyer spent a bit of time on the subject in his short range benchrest book.
I think I recall Wayne Campbell talking to this very subject in a recent interview on Utube.

I know for a fact that when I had some mentoring from afar, my "sensei" asked me to send him a pic of the target and a discussion followed about the shape of the bullet holes.

Now, I still suck at many things including short range benchrest, but I suspect the shape of the hole on paper is part of the story.

The bullet has just a little bit of wobbling going on verses the bullet that is stabilized better. Like Jim said a little yaw going on.

ok, so that will cause the tearing as well as coloring one side vs all. Thanks.

Clay I'm going with target backer. I already know you can tune, and I know you know what you is doing. So my conclusion is space/ gap between target and backer, and or previous holes in backer causing irrattic tears in target.

Thanks guys. Wow I learned more in Jack's 7-10 in a few minutes than all my knowledge thus far. Basically I stopped part way into 10 and thought, I don't know anything, time to go back to school.

I'm like, so that's why those loads/groups at 100 did that.

Is it running over 3400 at that charge,, I’ve shot lots 13 and 16 the most and theyre a half a grain apart but both shoot the best for me with 68s at 3410
I was at 28.9 with lot 13 and 28.35 with 16 both at 3410
