Tuner ?

Is there a reason tuners are clamp on vs threaded on?

BTW thank you HI-NV Shooter. Simple sution that did not occur to me until your post.

I would say it has more to do with ease of use. No need to get a barrel threaded just to add a tuner for rimfire. You can then also take it off without having to have thread protectors and indexing could be an issue to get the zero point on center/top.

The hole size also starts at about 3/4" so it would have to be a pretty large thread, not a standard 5/8-24 you see on most brakes, etc. Or you would have to see if you could get someone to make one with a much smaller hole to start.

Besides, why take the chance on having someone screw up an expensive and hard to come by match barrel with a crappy thread job when you can simply clamp one on?

The Proof barrel I ordered is threaded both ends and is a pre-fit. Many barrels come threaded and I suspect that is what the original post is looking for.

You are welcome, I think with a rim fire barrel a lot of them depend on the slugged finished length as most smiths look for the tight spot to crown at. so by turning down and threading you may loose that tight spot and possible accuracy.

Is this a Vudoo? I know of a shooter who is currently using a Harrell and it is clamped over a thread protector on a 20" barrel which is on a Vudoo. he is running some test with a light weight tuner and getting some pretty good results, from what he tells me.

Yes it is a Vudoo

What kind of accuracy are you seeing now? Do you know what barrel brand you have? Just curious.
I see Harrels makes a screw on tuner brake, no idea what that would do??? They do come in 1/2-28.

About 1/2" @ 50yds outdoors.
Ace barrel

I wondered exactly the same thing regarding threading a barrel and screwing on a tuner. I was told by a benchrest shooter that threading a barrel will cause a discontinuity in the barrel with respect to tension and adversely affect the barrel harmonics which in turn with diminish the intrinsic accuracy of the barrel. He told me you will never see a competitive benchrest shooter thread a barrel. I don't know anything about benchrest but the person I spoke with holds numerous records so I have no reason to doubt him.

I have a Vudoo that has a 20" Kukri barrel on it and added a Harrells tuner. I bought the rifle with a threaded barrel so that if I ever wanted to put a suppressor on it, it would be set to go. When I bought the tuner, I had Harrells send a piece that was bored out to the proper size and threaded to go on the barrel. Then I took it to a machinist near here where for $20 they cut it down and sized it to the proper outer diameter for the tuner to go right over it. No Problems.

Thanks for the info.
That's what I was thinking I would do because the thread protector that was on the Vudoo has knurling on it and does not have a smooth transition to the barrel.

If you haven't ordered the Harrells yet ask them about the screw on piece. $10. direct from Harrells and they will bore the tuner itself to the diameter you need (that's the tuner, not the adapter).
