Tuner Cleaning

Do you ever remove your barrel tuner & give it a thorough cleaning? If so, how often and how do you clean it?

I shot over 2000 rounds last year out of a 6BRX. Never had the tuner off until winter came. I do wipe it out on the inside from the muzzle end every time I clean, which is after every match or practice session. Right or wrong, that has worked fine for me.

It depends on the type or tuner you have. If tuner sticks out past muzzle I would clean it every season.

My tuner never requires cleaning because it goes over the barrel, so muzzle blast never touches it.

I have a Harrel style tuner on the end of a 1913.

You would be amazed at the build up after a few hundred rounds. Killough's sells a tool for about $20 that will clean the tuner without removal down to the crown. You just need 3" square patches to really ream out the poo.

I have the Killough tool for cleaning Harrel tuners, but the tuner on my 40x is an Accushot and is a bit too long for the tool. It works reasonably well, so I still use it, but it's not perfect. The tuner is stainless, so I'm wondering about taking it off occasionally & spraying the inside down with carburetor cleaner. Or is there something better? I also wonder what the barrel crown looks like after a couple thousand rounds.

The tip on my cleaner sticks out about 1/4" to get to the crown. A folded up small patch between the cleaning tool and the 3" patch will give enough of a bump to clean the crown.

Unfortunately for me, the Killough/Harrel tuner cleaning tool is about 3/4" to short to reach the barrel crown in my Accushot tuner. I guess I'll have to find somebody with a lathe to turn the handle down an inch or so to extend the working length of the tool. The expanded dia. of the tool at the leading end, where the patch goes, is also a very tight fit; maybe too tight, so I can maybe have that turned down at the same time. Meanwhile, I guess I'll just pull the tuner off & give it a good scrubbing. Oh, and the tip on my cleaning tool doesn't stick out at all. In fact, there's a shallow, small dia. hole drilled at the end.

Or does anybody know of a better tool for my Accushot tuner?

In fear of stating the obvious, and no insult intended to anyone, before removing the tuner to clean, measure the tuner (as set) with electronic calipers to get the exact length. Then, when reinstalling, screw it in and click to get the same exact length on the tuner. To skip this step may easily get you 10-15 clicks off desired length.

Good advice--thanks. Fortunately, I did remember to do this but at my age, remembering to do the "obvious" isn't a given. Sometimes the obvious isn't so obvious. :

I am glad it was well received. Some people get real testy when the obvious is written down and feel they wasted all of fifteen seconds reading something they already knew.

Think of someone being off on the reset and blowing through half a brick trying to figure what went wrong.

Yeah--that could have easily been me. And at today's prices, half a brick is $75, even when bought by the case.

Lesloan, are you shooting a Accushot from Randy down in Louisiana? If so, he makes a tuner cleaning tool which is 8 inches long and will clean a tuner even with a bloop tube. The Accushots that I have seen had Fudd stainless tuners on them and this tool will clean both the Fudd and Harrell style. Check his web site, they are $30.00 and made of aluminum.

Received my Accu-shot tuner yesterday, and immediately put it to the test. Folks, this thing is the bee's knees! It's made of solid, machined aluminum and everything about it is perfect. It has all the length I need for my Accu-shot tuner (or, I'd guess, for about any tuner on the market), is the right diameter at the working end and has a coarse knurling that really holds onto the patch when extracting the tool from the tuner. I couldn't be happier with it.

I am using a tuner on both my rimfire and centerfire. I clean after each use. Using a rubber handle toothbrush from my dentist and carbon remover from auto parts place. Wrap the handle with a piece of paper towel leaving an overhang. Wipes right out. No cavaties in the tuner either. LT
