Truing and Timing a Savage

I've heard the term"Have your Savage trued and timed". Just exactly what does that mean? Can someone explain what is done to true and time the Savage target action on my 12 F T/R ?
The truing I think I understand kinda, but the timing is new term to me. Thanks for any insite into this.

i am not 100% sure, but i think timing is making the firing pin more precise when you pull the trigger, so when you pull the trigger, the pin goes.

I'm not sure of the exact procedure, but for Savages "bolt timing" was developed by Fred Moreo of Savage Shooters Supply. He reshapes and alters the angles and surfaces of the cocking cams on the bolt to make it easier and smoother to open the bolt. Blueprinting or "truing" is to square off the front of the receiver and the barrel nut to assure a square mating surface. The bolt lugs are sometimes touched up to make sure the mating surfaces are square and make good contact with the recesses in the receiver. In rare instances the threads for the barrel are recut to make them true, but I believe this not common.

I read a post about timming the savage action. what i understood was that primary extraction is acomplished before the stricker starts it rearward movement. this makes the bolt easier to lift as you are not starting extr. and cocking at the same time. that's what i under stood. treeman

reloader243,
I've got a Savage action trued by Fred at Sharp Shooter Supply.
Other posters are correct. He cuts the receiver front and lugs square to the threads, squares up the bolt face, and the backs of the bolt lugs, and adjusts fireing pin travel. Everything ends up true to the threads.
He times the action by adjusting the cocking cam. This GREATLY reduces bolt lift after firing a shot. I also added one of his tactical handles, so cocking force went down and leverage with the longer handle went up.
His rates are reasonable, but turn time has lengthened because he is so popular. Not sure what it is now though.

I've heard the Savage target actions are pretty square. But Fred's price to true/time it is worth the price just to get the cocking timing better.

I've had a couple actions done by Fred... they shot well before, they shot well after. The bolt lift was a little easier afterwards.

My advice would be to get 'on the list', and ask to be notified when you are one or two out from being next. Then go shoot your rifle as is until called. When they call, wrench it apart, send it off, and that way you minimize the 'down time' while you wait. Once you're 'up', it doesn't take very long for him to get your stuff done and back out the door, typically).

Good luck,

Monte

Thanks guys for the info, that answers my questions and puts me on the right road. E-mailed SSS to be put on the list,to time and true my 12 F T/R, and will probably send the new barrel to be installed and headspaced the 1st time. Want to use both barrels .308 factory and Shilen super select match .243 AI 28" 1x8" twist. Everything I hear about Fred is great, and looking forward to having him do what he does best.

Try Stockade Gun Works in Chadron Nebraska. Kevin Rayhill. He's verry good with Savage actions and great to deal with, and timley).

Kevin at Stockade does some awsome work with Savage stuffand it shoots very well when you get it back.Good luck and great shooting.

I haf SSS true and time an action for me. I have owned quite a few savages and I don't think the trueing and timing is necessary. With factory bbls both heavy and sporter, I could Always get 3/4 moa with handloads. Some rifles took more experimenting than others. I really didn't notice any difference in bolt lift after SSS worked on the action. I am NOT saying that Fred doesn't do good work, just that I would try shooting a rifle without spending the extra $$$ first. If I remember correctly, Fred even told me that most savage actions were more true than most other actions and that Most Savages didn't need truing. When the receiver face was measured, It was only off by a few thousands wchich made little to No difference when it came to accuracy.

Thanks to all, thanks to 82boy....I followed the thread you put up, and Fred explains everything so that I understand it...anyway, the 50% that I'm smart enough to understand..lol. Fred's SSS returned my e-mail promptly, and let me know to contact them when my new barrel arrives....Shilen...end of Jan, I hope.!! PS can't believe the great wealth of knowledge you guys have, and freely give....Thanks..Rick
