True custom 17HMR

I appreciate all the info. im not sure what ill do if anything at all. I did have a tikka t1X in 17HMR come through the shop this weekend and the owner let me shoot it a bit. Only ammo i have is Hornady so i was pretty limited there. we started at 50 yards and grouped were right around 1/2'' maybe a touch less. We went to 100 yards as well and to my surprise the groups stayed under 3/4''. i figured for sure we were gonna shoot an inch or bigger after the 50 yard targets but the rifle did pretty well. I hate plastic stocked rifles and i pretty much refuse to own one. If Tikka ever puts a wood stock on these t1X rifle I'm sure ill purchase one1 Id like to play with a CZ as well. I understand all too well that the Ammo is the big factor here and i think most of you are correct. No matter how good a barrel or chamber i think the results will be average at best.
aspirin shoot season starts next week so ill be playing with my 22LR when i can pull myself away from the shop. So much fun watching those little pills turn into a dust cloud!!
Scott, you are welcome to come see my shop anytime. I think you will like what you see! 217 246 0787

I heard that the T1X might use the same stock as a T3 or T3x. In any case you’re not stuck with factory Tupperware.

Hey Lee,
Thanks for the invite. I travel to Indianan to shoot RFBR several times a season and will see if we can do a visit. You are not that far from I-74, which I travel quite a bit during season.

I did a little experiment the other day with my CZ 457 Varmint. I have very little time with it, as I am new to the .17hmr and it's my first CZ. It's the 24" barrel that can be had with the At-One stocked model. I changed out the stock to the regular walnut CZ Varmint stock. The barrel doesn't seem very heavy for a varmint model and heats up quickly. I have been reading about the HMR round and found several people that were (1) experiencing better performance with the non-toxic loads, and (2) were sorting ammo by both weight and length. Not having any non-toxic loads, I did weight and length sort a box or so of Hornady V-Max loads. Horrible QC on both length and weight. With a clean bore and a cold barrel, the rifle shot much better. One group was right at 3/8" (center to center) @ 100yds, five shots. Cherry picked, yes, but with the wind that day and no flags out, I was impressed. I shot both sorted and non-sorted ammo and the sorted was definitely better.

Rifle is stock except for a trigger spring replacement which gives a 1lb let off. Atlas bi-pod and a Walmart rear bag was the bench setup. A few takeaways would be, the barrel heating issues and how fast accuracy deteriorates as the bore gets dirty. Both happen very quickly.

Now, some of this matters and some of it doesn't. Rifle was purchased to snipe groundhogs, (doesn't matter) and shoot early season P-dogs (does matter). A heavier barrel will help with heating issues to a point, fouling.......don't think so, but maybe since it would be a custom barrel. I had another .17 rimfire and it fouled just as fast as the Hummer.

I do find the topic interesting though and if you decide to put something together, I would love to see the results.

Regards.......Scott
