Hard to beat the Gitzo tripods. They got started making machine gun mounts for the French army. The older models have that look about them. Manfrotto/Bogen are also excellent. Last forever as long as you don't drive over them with a tank.

In regard to hauling a shooting tripod to/from the shooting site, I came across this item and ordered it.
I really don't need or want a bulky backpack arrangement for what I do....rockchucks in the sage and juniper here. I'll be using this on my BOG Death Grip tripod come spring.
This seems light and simple, but the proof of course will be experience in the field.

For most of my sage rat shooting, my BR Pivot Lite is perfect, but for those times when setting up the bench is not wanted, or when out for rockchucks, this seems like a good idea when some walking to a different shoot site is in order. Guess we'll see once winter is over and the rats are out 'n about once again.

Another simple option if you don't mind carrying, is to use a short bungee cord, take the hooks out, and use a couple of zip ties to strap it to one leg at the balance point.

I actually did that, but the cord dug into my shoulder, so went with the commercial unit above that stays on the tripod and deploys quickly when wanted. Much more comfy, and hey, it's only money, right? lol

Anyone used the Fox Zero BOG conversion kit and if so what are your thoughts?

alf, how would you compare the stability of the Leofoto 324 with the 364 from sitting to standing. Is the larger diameter tubes a noticeable improvement in stability between the two.

I have a LS-324CEX with a MA30 head and have thought about going up in size.

I have a LS-324CEX with a MA30 head and have thought about going up in size.

For coyote hunting, I always sat when calling, so the 324 was great for that. When I got into night time hunting, I found there were times I needed to stand, and the 324 was a bit short, doable, but not the best. Stability suffered a little too. So adding the 364 to the mix was more out of necessity.

The 364 is certainly more stable, partly because of the beefier legs, but also because I extend the 3 legs all the way out, then just spread them to acquire the needed height. I tightened the bolts that attach the legs to the tripod pretty snug, then I don't have to rely on the notches to hold them in place. So with the wider footprint & adding the longer spikes, it's a lot more stable w/o adding the cost & physical weight of a heavier tripod.

I bought a bog pod and used it exactly once on a hunt, too bulky and heavy for me, all the younger guys around here run them for coyotes & deer. I prefer my $7.00 homemade shooting sticks.

After trying a BOG deathgrip, I returned it as the clamp had a plastic handle for tightening.
It was a reasonable solution for a single shot but not ideal for a target rich environment.

I dug out my old video gear and repurposed my video camera tripod setups with fluid heads.
Once the tension is set, the balance is perfect and you can "steer" the rifle with your off hand.

Smaller tripods and heads are good for rimfire rifles.

If you have to drive to find the colonies, the tripod is much easier to setup than the shooting tables.

Update
So I snagged this tripod off Facebook market for $20
I got a leveling head $59 and a saddle clamp $33 from Amazon to complete the rig today
Shown with my trusty PD getter that weighs in around 17 lbs
The leveling head is Great! I like it better than a ball head--I got the smaller one --if doing it again they make same one rated at 55 lbs--but I do feel like the smaller one is good--
Moral of the story is $20 plus $59 plus $33 so just about $120 total and I have a great tripod set up!
I could add $9 and spray it cammo or some such
