Trigger Over travel

Is trigger over travel of any significance on a slow fire bolt action rifle? Does having a long over travel prevent the shooter from upsetting the rifle by allowing the bullet to exit the barrel before the trigger finger (and trigger) come to an abrupt stop? Is a very small over travel preferred?

you need to fix it.no one needs to feel the wait before the fireing pin falls.and welcome to the site.you just need a crisp fall of the fireing oin with a sweet pul of the trigger.

I need to clarify. What I'm suggesting is a trigger with no take up. No creep. A light and crisp break and a endless over travel after the break. What is wrong with that?

In his book, Mike Ratigan, a very successful benchrest shooter, mentions that he intentionally adjusts his triggers so that they have over travel, for just the reason that you mentioned. There are a lot of little details in shooting that have been passed down without much examination. The idea that there is something functionally superior about a trigger that "breaks like an icicle" with no perceivable take up or over travel is the standard by which all others are judged is one of them.

Nothing at all if it works for you. Most prefer a bit of take-up, just to be on the safe side of where it breaks.

As for endless overtravel... that might take some clever trigger re-engineering. Most are limited to just how much you can dial in. ;-)

I also prefer alittle take up with some actual overtravel. To me it seems smoother that way as I cut my teeth on an old 03-A3 rifle. I love that 2 stage feel.It makes me feel that I know where the seer release is everytime. And it has some overtravel to boot, kinda a squeeze through feel so I see nothing wrong with adjusting a trigger to suit you. Not all rules apply to all shooters. Our rules are basically opinions from other people who go with the flow. Not me and not you and others. If it works dont try to alter anything other than the way you like it.
