trigger install trobble

I am having trouble installing a trigger so I bought a new Jewell . It seems as though the action is drilled a little off. I can't get the rear pin through the trigger housing and when it starts just a little the bolt wont go in . My guess would be drill the trigger housing not the Panda action?

edit -- the pins go through both the trigger housing and the action, but not both at the same time. The guide pin does go during installation. The trigger is for a Rem 700. I believe a #11.

I'd say STEP AWAY FROM THE DRILL!! and wait for some more advice from some kind dudes who might have experience in this department.

I'm just thinking that I'd hate to drill either a Jewell or a Panda unless absolutely necessary. jd

It is likely that the hole spacing is off on either the trigger hangar or the trigger itself. you can get a pretty close idea of the actual dimension by inserting the pins in the holes and using a caliper to measure between the pins. Measure both the hangar and the trigger, then call Kelblys. They can help you determine which part is out, and if it is the hangar, they will certainly send a new one. I've had the same issue once or twice and it was the trigger that was a little off. I did elongate the rear holes in the trigger housing, but you could also just send it back.

MMMMmmmm Kelbly's is closed until Monday. My Panda is a older one and doesn't have a hanger. Is that something I can add? I will measure the layout and repost. thanks for the replies Don

The closest I can calculate is the holes in the action are about .008 further apart than the 3 triggers that I have. The pins have a C-C of 1.425 on the trigger holes?

That is a very old action. Has it not had a trigger in it all these years? Thats where you should start- dont drill anything. Triggers from the 70’s are the same as today so thats not it. Try your trigger in another action

Dusty, Yes it had a Shilen in it when I got it and did work. I have a Hart trigger and the Jewell and they all measure the same C-C none fit well so I believe it's the action. The action is a 87. Do they accept a hanger?

I was alluding to the classifieds (generically speaking) possibly having some “customized” custom actions lurking. Not a believer that there’s extra metal in need of removal, that’s just me.

aggravating for sure. The action is glued and the stock is all chipped up it needs body work and paint [ which I can do ] . Our season is starting and I don't have time to do all this. If I send it in I will miss half the season. It's SNAFU.

Can you put the other trigger back in to get you by? Can you put the new trigger in another action? It doesnt take but a few minutes to pop the action out of the stock, i sure wouldnt be fighting this issue while in the stock

Grind a nice chamfer on the end of pin you insert first. Should just tap right in...

Just a thought, did you measure the existing trigger with the pins to compare to the new triggers? You might contact the trigger manufactures (Jewell and Hart) to see what they might have to say. They may have a trigger that will fit this action.

I am with Dusty, make due with what you got for now until you have time to have this addressed by an experienced gunsmith.

FWIW, many years ago Arnold Jewell told me to put the rear pin in first, then the front one. If you do it the other way round it may cause the trigger side plates to squeeze together and lead to trigger problems. Not your problem.... but it may be worth a try. Good luck.

I would like to thank all the people that helped talk me through this small setback.
I tool the easy way out. I installed the trigger using the front pin [with guide pins] After I had it in place I put a guide pin in the back hole then ran a .125 drill through the action just far enough to line drill the two sides of the trigger housing. I did not drill into the other side of the action. Took the trigger assembly out and washed everything with carb cleaner spray. You can hardly see how much the hole was enlarger but could feel it with the drill. I installed the bolt and everything seems to work as it should .
How long does a simple 10 minute job take you? Me = 2 days

Me personally would have never run a drill through the hole. The material you took out made the hole not round anymore and the pin will fit sloppy. May even come out or fall out. A chamfer on the pin would allow the pin to take up a few thou of misalignment and glide in with a few taps.

The drill only took .008 from the trigger housing hole. The hole through the action is still the same. I thought about that.
