Trail Boss Loads

kanuck
If "kanuck" really means "canuck" you need to know that Trail Boss doesn't like to be cold. In the 50's here today and my group dropped 2 1/2". Still 3/4 moa tho. In my savage 110/308 I shoot 12 gr behind a Hornaday 150 FMJBT.

memilanuk, great link. Noticed that the 300 Rum didn't make the list. I wonder if the case is just too big.

Laurie Holland is the one who turned me on to that link a few days ago... I was looking for some sub loads for my .308 ;)

Yeah, shoot, they don't have 460 Weatherby Magnum in there, either. Drat! :o

I think it's funny you're asking this now because i finally grabbed some Trail Boss after 2 years of waiting. Since you're asking this it probably means you also managed to get some. Mine came from Cabelas.

I just worked a ladder on Friday:
.308Win Lapua Brass (LR)
Winchester Magnum
9.6g Trail Boss
175gr SMK

I'll have to go back and check the Chrono data but it had a pretty tight STDEV (3-4fps) @ IIRC ~1085fps. It was 60 degrees with 80% humidity near sea level and they sounded pretty quite. Not sure how temperature stabile the subsonic will be. Shot group sizes weren't the best but I'm going to have to do more testing.

I worked the loads using Quick Load data which was dead on (after a couple grain case volume adjustment). I loaded a couple 14.0gr loads just to check velocity for safety then started working backwards from 11.9gr in 0.5gr intervals. Used a Magneto Speed 3 to check velocities, could have affected shot group sizes a bit.

Can't wait to get back to the range to shoot with the can on.

Hodgdon is suggesting, by only recommending reduced loads for H4895, that there is something special about it for the purpose. But there's not. There are many powders suitable for reducing safely down to about 60% of max or more. One obvious example is IMR 4895 which of course is very similar to the Hodgdon version. But there are many more. Just look in the Richard Lee reloading book, Chapter 10, the section on using the "1 Grain Factor" (page 112 in the Second Edition). Any powder that shows a value in the "1 Grain Factor Velocity " column for a particular bullet weight is suitable for reducing. The Lee algorithm allows you to iteratively calculate an estimate of the velocity after reducing the charge by a number of grains. I used the factor provided for IMR 4895 with a 130- gr bullet in 270 Win, and the result was reasonably close to my chronograph readings. I used it to load down from the max 2957 listed to 2500 fps.

Yes I have data from hodgons for reduced loads for the 243 and most all are with h4895. I have never tried them though.
