Towable Shooting Bench

Hi guys,

Has anyone ever built a shooting bench you can tow?

Im not looking for highway type towing.

I have a private range out to 835 yards from a static bench which I built up and lay prone on.

I can move back and shoot off the top of my side by side to 1000 yards.

I have a large backstop pushed up and gongs set up from 400 yards out to 835 from the prone bench.

What I’m looking to do is build a bench I can hook up and tow behind my UTV that I can move up and down the range.

Move it to 100 yards from my main backstop and back down the range to 300-600 yards for shooting groups. Then tow back to my farm yard a few hundred yards away.

Anyone ever done anything like this?

Thanks in advance for plan sharing if you have.

Look at some of the concrete bench rests at clubs and the dolly system they use to move them around. Just a matter of putting a hitch on the end.

Wouldnt be hard to make if you got some pipe and welded stuff up. A "T" frame, wheels on each end of the T and a hitch on the bottom of the T. Three risers to weld on a table top and mount a seat behind the table closer to the hitch end. I got it visualized, just hard to put into words without drawing it out.

Or buy a small trailer and build a bench on it. Like a cool prarie dog shoot bench trailer

I have thought about it, but never built it. I would use a trailer axle with no springs, have a shade cover over it, and have swiveling tongue jacks not only on the tongue, but on both rear corners for leveling, and taking the bounce out of it when used/parked.

I think this rig is very well designed and built. The owner says it is very sturdy, and he can even tow it with a small off-road 4x4. Note the TWO legs in rear, so it has FOUR supports (two wheels + two legs):

Because it lacks any suspension, I wouldn't drive this on long journeys on bumpy highways... but for short expeditions to your local shooting areas, it looks sturdy enough.

You fellas must all live in places where the wind doesn't blow. Here in South Dakota there isn't but maybe 10 days a year you can shoot on something with rubber wheels when the wind won't adversely affect your hold.

If I wanted a mobile shooting platform, I'd have to build it like a mobile bank vault. lol

I think one of these would do for me.

Get the 6-horse model. Convert the first two stalls for a reloading room. Put your ATV in the back. A 12 Kw portable generator should get you by. Then a suitably outfitted F-350 4x4 ( or your preferred brand ) crew cab with long bed to carry a auxiliary fuel tank. Keep everything using the same fuel. Out-fit to your taste.

The above is when I win the lottery.

Personally, I've got a '06 Ranger 4x4 and a 5x10 utility trailer that gets me by. My F-350 isn't a 4x4 and is not worth a darn off-road

Why not leave your bench in the shade and make your target frame moveable?

I am in the flat farmland of northwest Ohio where it is all square miles and very unusual for a mile of road to not have at least two or three houses along each mile
Even though I shoot mostly thin jacketed varmint bullets or handguns I want my bullets to stop in the pile of dirt that I have behind my targets.

Yes, I know what you mean, I have cattle in the pasture on my 600yd range and use one of these.....IMG_20200310_154336304_HDR.jpg

This is all good stuff!!

thanks to all that posted.

I guess I didn’t even think about just loading one into a trailer. That’s easy.

There are also some great ideas for towing.

Thanks again!

I made a portable bullet trap......it allows me to move it to the distance I want.
