Tossing around the idea of buying a Ruger 10/22 31236 Stainless Steel

notice it says finish- stainless—. i think all ruger 10/22 have the aluminum receiver just different finishes. i went through this before with one that looked stainless but receiver wasnt. if u want all stainless check into it.
Yes, that's why I posted that info. The description leads one to believe it's stainless steel, it might be and it might not be. I'm thinking it is probably not all stainless steel.

I love mine, its an older model Sporter though, no barrel band.
Accurate enough for 50 yd plinking at cans
The only problem with it is like most 22's, a lot of times it doesnt go off
I dont think this is gun sepcific but more ammo specific
of course with a semi auto 10/22 most of us don't spring for premium ammo
------------
I like their mags, I do NOT like Tube magazines for out in the field
I would not get the "Take down" model
A buddy showed up with one during a shooting day, he was so proud of it because it did look cool
But...
That "Takedown Model" was the most innacurate thing I have ever seen.
I don't think your gun collection is complete without the Ruger 10/22

I bought one of the stainless models with the sporter barrel and black plastic stock. I put a BX trigger in it and it will regularly cut holes at 50 yards with Norma TAC-22 ammo.

50 yards
10 shots:

Nice! I can't help but think the Light Varmint/Target barrel in 20" is probably going to shoot better than the shorter barreled rifle.

Now see right there!! It's guys like you who give the rest of us unreasonable expectations and steal the happiness we might have had with our "normal" rifles. jd ;)

JDS,
I think that's a compliment. ;-) I'm telling you, when I bought this thing and first tried it, I thought it was a fluke. Nope, it's consistent on every outing. It's caused me to relegate my CZ 452 to backup duty. It's all stock except for the BX trigger. I can't see putting more money into it as it surpasses my expectations as a range toy and squirrel rig. One thing I will say is that the Waltz HP die does make TAC-22 more consistent. It also turns TAC-22 into my hunting loads by putting an HP in them.

I've always thought every American man (us) has at least one 10-22. I have two, both purpose-built rifles, one lightweight and a heavyweight.

We do much 'drive-by' ground squirrel shooting out the truck windows with window bags on the ranch. It's not unusual to go through an entire brick in a few hours during spring when the rats are very active. For shooting out the truck window, the heavy gun is perfect, but when out walking about for targets of opportunity, the L/W rifle is the obvious choice.

"Lola", my lightweight with a carbon fiber wrapped barrel, all Volq internals with a T/H synthetic stock, Leupold 3-9X with target elevation turret:

"Helga", the heavyweight rifle. Full Clark Custom, Douglas Premium Match air-guaged .920" barrel, Boyd's laminated T/H stock, Leupold 3-9X also with their target elevation turret:

Both rifles have taken squirrels out past 200 yards, and truckloads inside of 100. The truck floor after a morning out on the ranch perimeter two-track using the window bags:

Ammo of choice for both rifles is either Winchester Power Point HP, or CCI Mini-Mag HP, both shoot around 1/2" at 50 yards out of both rifles, with the accuracy nod going to the heavy barreled rig (no surprise).

I can't imagine not having at least one 10-22....it's the American .22!

(I won't mention how important it is to put a towel or other covering over the defroster vents while doing this. There are some fired cases that will remain in the dash long after I don't own the truck any more.......;) )

Miss Fires, from, a 10-22 can come From,.. too much Headspace ( Bolt Face to Chamber Rim, Depth )
Have someone check this Dimension Out for You, it should Be ,.. .039 to .041,. IIRC.
Weak Hammer springs or, Bad Ammo,.. could also Be, a Problem.

Back in the seventies, when 10-22's were really getting to be "a thing", there were two main reasons that pushed me over the edge to get one.
-- first reason was, that I came to hate tube fed 22's. A lot of our shooting involved stepping out of the truck and taking a shot. I had a rule -- no loaded chamber in my truck PERIOD!! Well, emptying a chamber on my tube fed Rem Speedmaster was just a pain in the ass. Much easier on my buddies Ruger.

Second reason -- back then most of us had those skanky CCI Blazers or Winchester Wildcat ammo. The stuff was so filthy with unburned powder granules and such, and the Rugers seemed to blow that crap out the port, whereas the tube fed autos seemed to get choked up in no time. jd

Here's what I was going by. If one of the local gun shops has one I'll try to see it in the next week or so.
