I've always thought every American man (us) has at least one 10-22. I have two, both purpose-built rifles, one lightweight and a heavyweight.
We do much 'drive-by' ground squirrel shooting out the truck windows with window bags on the ranch. It's not unusual to go through an entire brick in a few hours during spring when the rats are very active. For shooting out the truck window, the heavy gun is perfect, but when out walking about for targets of opportunity, the L/W rifle is the obvious choice.
"Lola", my lightweight with a carbon fiber wrapped barrel, all Volq internals with a T/H synthetic stock, Leupold 3-9X with target elevation turret:
"Helga", the heavyweight rifle. Full Clark Custom, Douglas Premium Match air-guaged .920" barrel, Boyd's laminated T/H stock, Leupold 3-9X also with their target elevation turret:
Both rifles have taken squirrels out past 200 yards, and truckloads inside of 100. The truck floor after a morning out on the ranch perimeter two-track using the window bags:
Ammo of choice for both rifles is either Winchester Power Point HP, or CCI Mini-Mag HP, both shoot around 1/2" at 50 yards out of both rifles, with the accuracy nod going to the heavy barreled rig (no surprise).
I can't imagine not having at least one 10-22....it's the American .22!
(I won't mention how important it is to put a towel or other covering over the defroster vents while doing this. There are some fired cases that will remain in the dash long after I don't own the truck any more.......
