Torque Wrench Opinions

Shynloco

You can lead a horse to water, but ........
Guys,
Looking for opinions on the best, not necessarily most economical, Torque Wrench any of you use torquing your actions screws, scope rings, etc...and I'm not talking one of those Wheeler yellow handled jobs either. Right now, I'm leaning toward a Seekonk (1- 100 in lbs). Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated in advance. Thx.

I am a fan of the CDI stuff. They are some how affiliate with Snap-on I think. I use them for action bolts in a snap action variety and a torque screw driver (micro adjustable in "#s) for torquing rings. They are pretty top notch. They weren't that cheap when I bought them, but I would guess the price has gone up, everything else has.

Your most accurate torque wrenches are dial type, not the click style. I have a Snap-on 1-75 in lb. that I use for setting up rotating resistance on gear sets that I also use on the action screws. But I must admit I just do it by feel most of the time and don't see a difference.

I appreciate the comments so far. Let me say that I'm ONLY interested in the "DIAL" type of torque wrenches and I'm not talking about torquing engine parts or something similar that I grew up doing when playing with engines in years past. I already have three click type torque wrenches and not interested in a 4th. Based upon a couple of articles I've read that were written by Team Leaders whose teams represent some of the top manufacturers of certain rifles (ie. Team Savage), they make recommendations for action screw torquing values that they've found leads to optimum performance and accuracy when all every other facet of their rifles are set for best performance. Keep the ideas comin! Thx

I purchased a Seekonk TSQ-75 a couple of years ago and am very happy with it. They claim accuracy of +/- 3%.

I too use the 1-75 snap-on works great

torque wrenches come in two different standards. None are perfect. Normally the top 20% and the bottom 20% are the least accurate unless you have one of the lab quality jobs. I once had a digital Snap On that read a max of 60 in.lb., and had it calibrated in the lab. It was within one inch pound thru out the scale, but was also almost $200 in 1980 dollars! But I needed a very accurate range from 10in. lb. to 25 in.lb. to make machine adjustments. I couldn't get close to it with the typical break over jobs, and needed one with a dial. I left that one at work thinking I'd never have a use for it again (plus they paid for it). Later I found a similar non digital wrench on Ebay from Snap-On, and had it calibrated. It was spot on, and had about $75 in it. It uses a dial, which allows me to see if something is going wrong as I creep up on a reading. Before that I used a Proto with a dial reading (1/4") that was pretty good, but the Snap-On is that much better. The better wrenches repeat far better than the cheapo jobs, and dealing with very small screws becomes important. Buy a good one and cry once, and buy a cheap one and cry a lot.

Just want to say THANKS to those who took the time to response and provide detailed info on the torque wrench they use and their reasoning as well. Got give a special THX to Dave Berg for going so far as to provide the link to the best overall (shipping included) priced CDI torque wrench. People on this site continue to be the most helpful group on any blog I frequent and is where I've learned to always go first if you want the straight scoop minus the attitude that some blogs provide. Thanks once again to all.
