Top choice for sizing lube.

Russ,
When I was shooting an AR SR, I'd wait until I had around 500pcs. of fired 223 before beginning the sizing/trimming/processing job. Batch-spraying with OneShot was the only way to go, and for me, it still is.

I've used Imperial for years for heavy duty jobs like forming 40-65 out of 45-70, and for breaking in a new sizing die. Three or four cases lubed with Imperial seem to give a new sizer a coating so that it'll work better with OneShot thereafter.

As much faith as I had in Imperial, I was surprised & disappointed when I tried it for forming 6 HAGAR out of 30 Rem. John Harrison had recommended I use Dillon liquid case lube for that job, and I found that it worked much better than Imperial for this application.

When I was shooting a service rifle (M1 - it's been a while) I used the Dillon lube and it worked very well. I keep a jar of it on hand and have used it now and then, particularly when a new shooter comes over with a big bag of brass and needs to learn the basics. My principal complaint is having to tumble the brass to remove it. With Imperial I simply wipe the case with a wet paper towel, roll it dry on a regular towel laid out over my leg and it's ready to load.

Rtheurer, Royal has been out since 2007 and is made by the Sharp Shoot R, the same people who make wipe-out and patch-out.

I like it, works great for me.

Well Russ,

You know that I like Hornady One Shot for my AR-15 cases. I process about 250 per batch and do about 3000 in a weekend. But this is simple resizing... I use the "spray and shake" method in a piece of tupperware (don't tell my wife! I've got it on permanent loan!). The trick is to wait until it's completely dry to avoid stuck cases.

For my bolt guns, I use Hornady Unique. I "borrowed" a little Imperial (from you?) and I found Unique to be just as slick, a little softer when applying and easier to remove. But as with Imperial you've got to be careful not to put too much on as a little goes a LONG way! Unique was also less expensive. Seems like I've only scratched the surface of the tub in two years... I've used it to neck down cases and bump shoulders back with no issue, but no heavy case forming.

I'll have to try some of the methods described here for cleaning as I've been tumbling it all and picking out media from the flash hole.

Now about that top ranked national shooter stuff, I thought that was you...

Take care!

Doug

Very interesting post and I'm surprised that not one person mentioned Lee Case Sizing Lube. If there's a better sizing lube, I'm not aware of it. It's not oily, wipes completely off with a rag and leaves no deposit. I don't care for the tube it comes in, though, and I empty the tube out into old J-B cups and simply touch it with my finger, wipe it on the case or neck, and resize, wipe off with a rag and I'm done. No oil, never had a shoulder dent and never a stuck case.

Give Lee a try.

Reed,
If you read reply #19 you will see Kenny 474 mentioned it a couple of times in his post. :)
Wayne.

we all can be a little over zelus ;). when heavy form try applying a light coat of Imperial sizing wax on to the shoulder and body then wipe wipe off the shoulder and top one third case this will help reduce oil dents. Check out Youtube AMMOSMITH.COM ;D

Sure 'nuff, Wayne. Thanks for the tip as I had "stopped reading" too soon. Kenny has some good points about Lee Lube. I use it as-is and dab a bit on with a finger and wipe it all off completely after sizing. All my reloading is for target shooting and I know all my cases up close and personal and have no need to load a lot of rounds in a short time.

Just about all the BR shooters at my range, who still reload at the range, use Imperial sizing wax and lightly neck size. The advent of the 30BR in point-blank BR has just about done away with the need to load at the range. H4198 and the 30BR case are so forgiving that preloading is now quite common.

Even for neck-sizing only, I still prefer Lee over the waxes, but it's just a personal preference and either works fine ... though waxes are bit harder to get wiped off completely.

I use ONE SHOT because it is good stuff and it is very fast. Do a nice once over of all your cases and call it good. Done.

Way off topic, but Imperial wax reminds me of something I used to use in my hair, way back in the days. One was green like this and one orange. Which one was Butch Wax and which Crew Cut? ;D

Butchs was orange, Crew Cut was light green. ed
