Top 4 firearms you should own

I just watched a video on youtube about the basic firearms everyone should own and it got me to thinking about what my choices would be. I approached this with the mind set that if I had to choose just only 4 firearms for the rest of my life and these firearms were needed to preform any and every task one would and might encounter thru their lifetime....here they are and here's why...whats your pick

1. Rem. 870 wingmaster 12ga. shotgun. A shotgun is probably one of the most versatile firearms out there. Many things can be hunted with it and the rem. 870 is a proven platform with many, many aftermarket and factory parts available. Could be used for home defense and hunting.

2. Rem 700BDL 30-06. This rifle can pretty much cover everything from varmints to elephants...A huge selection of ammo and again many, many aftermarket and factory parts available. In an all out war situation though it wouldn't fill every niche it would be an awesome all around rifle for hunting and protection.

3. Springfield Armory 1911-A1 in .45cal. what else can i say about the .45...if I had to pick only one pistol this would be it...as far as brand that is up for grabs..personally i have owned several Springfields and have been very pleased with them though there are many, many other companies that make similar quality and even better...If it was only one pistol the .45cal would be it. And you can't even begin to catalog the millions of parts available for the 1911-A1.

4. Marlin Model 39A In my opinion everyone should own a really good 22lr. I personally love the 39A. Shoots shorts, longs, longrifles. So easy to find .22lr ammo and these guns are tack drivers even with just plain ole open sights...Thousands and thousands of game have fallen to the 22lr.

Got versions of all of them. Mine was made in 1947 I believe , I hope mine is ok.

Sadly, I can't recommend the Model 39A anymore. The old ones were good, but recent production quality has slipped. The sliding bolt is secured on only one side. As a result, mine (which has made three trips back to Marlin without a proper fix), is VERY finicky about ammo, and when she jams, it locks up tight. You'll find other similar sad reports on the net. See: http://reviews.basspro.com/2010/10217876/marlin-39a-22lr-rifle-reviews/reviews.htm

In the cowboy action game, which has .22LR side matches, you'll find way more Winchesters and Henrys. I love the look and feel of the 39A, and it makes my thin-barreled Winchester feel like a toy. But my Winchester 9422 Legacy feeds everything, never jams, and it's just as accurate as my Marlin 39A. Oh and the lever on the 9422 is much smoother and easy to work fast. The bolt is fully enclosed by the receiver housing so it is supported on both sides. If you want to buy a current production lever gun, the Winchester is the one to get, IMHO. I've owned them both, and the 39A has been a problem child, though it is accurate with the right ammo.

Good point Boss..i guess i have been spoiled with my 39A it was given to me by my dad and my dad received it from his dad...if memory serves me correctly it was bought somewhere in the late '50s...Sad to hear the quaility has went downhill since then...this is the only one ive ever owned.

I think an AR-15 should be on the list. It'd be the one gun I'd grab if it really got bad. I'm not sure where I heard this but it goes something like this: "If you're in a situation where you need a pistol, you need a rifle." I'd probably replace the 22LR or the 30-06 with it.

I agree...i was thinking of making it 5 top firearms and one of those choices being a military type firearm...though if i had to choose a military firearm i dont know if it would be an AR-15 or the workhorse AK-47...both are amazing in thier own way

The older ones are classics to be sure. But that open-sided bolt design really needs to be hand-fitted to run right, and sadly, the days of skilled hand-fitting are done. The bolt on my 39A floats out too far causing all sorts of problems. But the older ones are gems and the take-down capability (see knurled knob in photo) is very nice.

Ya, it sad whats happened to Marlin. I had a 39a that went back 3 times. I demanded a refund, and got it. I found a late 50's model. I am much happier with it.

My pop's has a 30+ year old 39a and its nice. Its strangely quiet? I have a new Henry lever action .22 and I love it. I put the extra high see through rings so I can use the iron sights or the scope.

Got my 39a from my parents in 81 for Christmas. Its the only gun my parents ever bought me. And its shire been a good rifle never one problem with it. And that thing has shot some ammo for shire. He bought three of them at the same time one of them is still in the box.

I hate to say this but the ak-47 is another gun while not being real accurate is surely one of the best all around combat rifles ever. You can store them in your pond for the winter and pull it out in the spring and it will probably fire.

No AK-47 will ever live in my house. Too many bad memories.

For home protection, nothing beat a 12ga shotgun with #4 Buckshot. It gets the job done plus will not hurt any of your neighbors.

The rest is up to your individual needs.

PS: Ask any law enforcement person, they will tell you a shotgun will break up a crowd quicker than any other gun around.

I have 3 of them, but my Rem 700 is in 308. I guess I am going to have to find a 30-06 to join it. Bought a 39a last year for my son, and it still shoots very low. Has been to a Gunsmith once so far with no fix. I will try getting it fixed again.

A very good reason to buy another gun...Now we cant go without a complete list of everything we might need...can we?...i explained this to the misses and she reluctantly seen the need to have a complete set...you know "just in case" does eventually happen.

1. A super duper nice 20 or 12 gage. Been protecting American homes and daughters for years. 8)
2. 223 bolt action varmint rifle. No brainer. ::)
3. Good quality deer rifle, pick your poison. ;)
4. 375H&H. You never know. ;D

I'm close! My 12 gauge is a Mossberg 500. My bolt action is a Savage .308. My 1911 is a Colt. And, my Marlin 39A is exactly that, gold trigger and all!

I'd opt for-
1.4X scoped S&W 41 or Ruger MKII pistol as they pack easier that a lever/semi .22 rifle & shoot as well in capable hands.
2.An AR-15 carbine w/ 1:7" twist w/ stripper clipped 77gr ammo over an AK/SKS.
3.A 30-'06 or .338 caliber Rem 700 rifle.
4. Sig Sauer P220 or S&W 945 45ACP pistol.
